When Google began testing its Wi-Fi enabling balloons, the company probably wasn't expecting to cause panic in New Zealand. The Wall Street Journal writes that the country's emergency services were contacted on Friday after one of the tech giant's balloons was mistaken for a crashing plane. A rescue helicopter was sent to investigate the presumed wreckage, which was reported to be seen off the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island. … [Read more...] about Google Loon Wi-Fi balloon creates panic in New Zealand

Battlestar Galactica’s on Peacock: Top moments from the best sci-fi series ever
Hera's bones discovered on 'our' Earth (S4, E20: Daybreak, Part 2)All this has happened before, and all this will happen again. Not everyone loved Battlestar Galactica's finale, but I think Ron Moore closed the loop in an ingenious, and unexpected, way: The fleet settled here and became our forefathers. Flash-forward to present day -- our present day -- as scientists have discovered the bones of a common matrilineal ancestor (Hera!). Meanwhile, increasingly human robots are taking the stage. Our stage. By weaving real-world events into Galactica's narrative, Moore beautifully dovetailed his fiction with our reality. … [Read more...] about Battlestar Galactica’s on Peacock: Top moments from the best sci-fi series ever
Google wants to start beaming internet from its high-altitude balloons next year
That's still a secondary goal to bringing internet to populated areas that don't have proper access to it though. Loon's balloons still need a lot of improvements to get there, but Google is optimistic that those will come. Mike Cassidy, a Google X project director, tells Wired, "We’ve definitely crossed the point where there’s a greater than 50 percent chance that this will happen." … [Read more...] about Google wants to start beaming internet from its high-altitude balloons next year
Dear Asus router user: You’ve been pwned, thanks to easily exploited flaw
"Out of curiosity, I entered 'ftp://[my external ip address]' into my browser and sat wide eyed when I saw the contents of my media server show up," the blogger wrote. "I reasoned it must be because I’m already inside the network (which doesn’t even make sense really), but panic was starting to set in. So I pulled out my phone and turned off the Wi-Fi connection and tried it there. Now I was worried." … [Read more...] about Dear Asus router user: You’ve been pwned, thanks to easily exploited flaw
Google unveils ‘Project Loon,’ an experiment to bring balloon-powered internet to ‘the entire world’
Google has unveil what it's calling its "latest moonshot" out of the Google X labs. It's called "Project Loon," and as reported last month, it involved sending up a huge number of giant balloons to beam down internet access to remote regions around the globe. Google says that balloons make sense for this purpose — they're cheap to deploy and can provide wireless coverage in areas that would otherwise be difficult to serve due to geography. … [Read more...] about Google unveils ‘Project Loon,’ an experiment to bring balloon-powered internet to ‘the entire world’
