This long-lost Linux distro is making a big comeback
Slackware , one of the oldest Linux distros , has put out the beta of its upcoming 15.0 release, nearly a decade after version 14.0. Slackware was created by Patrick Volkerding and had its first release almost three decades back, in 1993. This makes the distro one of the two oldest Linux distros that are still actively maintained (the other being Debian ). While Slackware is still actively developed behind the scenes, the distro doesn’t put out releases as often as some of the current crop. Check our collection of the best Linux distros for business Here’s our list of the best Linux distros for developers And, these are the best laptops for developers Most modern distros, such as Ubuntu and Fedora, release every six months, but Slackware follows the “release when it’s ready” philosophy. No surprise, then, that the distro’s downloadable images last hit the mirrors sometime in 2016 with Slackware 14.2. Utah passed a law making iPhones filter porn — but only if other states pass one, too
On March 24th, Utah’s governor signed a bill aimed at making mobile devices automatically filter pornography. The original article, written previously, follows. In the next week, Utah’s governor will decide whether to make all phones and tablets in the state filter pornography... sort of. The bill, which passed Utah’s legislature earlier this month, would require mobile devices to “automatically enable a filter capable of blocking material that is harmful to minors.” Gov. Spencer Cox has said he will “carefully consider” signing it by the March 25th deadline. But the rule won’t change anything in the immediate future — a fact one lawmaker even cited as a benefit. In theory, Utah’s H.B. 72 mandates active adult content filters on all smartphones and tablets sold in Utah. Phone makers would provide a passcode to let buyers disable the filter, although it’s not clear if they’d need to verify the buyer’s age beforehand. If a filter isn’t automatically enabled when a user … [Read more...] about Utah passed a law making iPhones filter porn — but only if other states pass one, too
Oracle makes GoldenGate a cloud-native, fully-managed service
must read What is cloud computing? Everything you need to know from public and private cloud to software as a service An introduction to cloud computing from IaaS and PaaS to hybrid, public and private cloud. Read More Oracle on Wednesday announced that it's making GoldenGate, its popular real-time data fabric, available as a cloud-native service that's highly automated and fully managed. The intent is to bring the service to a wider market -- both by making it more affordable and more accessible for non-technical users. As a general purpose, real-time data fabric, the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) GoldenGate service goes further than other cloud providers' options for real-time data replication, Oracle contends. Amazon Web Services offers a more narrowly-focused database migration service, while Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure require customers to take a more hands-on approach. Oracle's GoldenGate technology is a set of platform components that has … [Read more...] about Oracle makes GoldenGate a cloud-native, fully-managed service
Here are the updates that didn’t make it in Apple’s livestream yesterday
Apple crammed quite a few announcements into a short, one-hour presentation yesterday: new iPad Pros , new iMacs , a new Apple TV 4K , and the long-rumored launch of AirTags , to name a few. But for everything Apple executives and product managers said onstage, there was something else that didn't get mentioned (or got passed over quickly, perhaps). Many of these smaller details were hidden on product, specs, or support pages after Apple updated its website with the event's new products. This isn't a comprehensive list of all the things that changed on Apple's website, but we're picking some of the most interesting ones. Let's start with OS updates. Table of Contents New OS updates hit next week The Intel 21.5-inch iMac isn’t going anywhere (yet) The Mac mini gets better Ethernet A kaleidoscope of accessories Apple TV clarifications: No 120 Hz yet, and a new remote for all There’s a new approach to RAM in the iPad Pro AppleCare offered with … [Read more...] about Here are the updates that didn’t make it in Apple’s livestream yesterday
