MADRID: A senior US diplomat said here that European nations and telecom operators should exclude Chinese tech giant Huawei from any involvement in the development of 5G networks. "That 5G toolbox for the European Union (EU) says that a high-risk vendor should not be providing critical or sensitive components to these networks," Robert Strayer, the US State Department's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Cyber and International Communications and Information Policy, said at a forum in Madrid. The EU guidance, he added, likewise says that "what had traditionally been viewed as the edge, the periphery, of the network will now have very important computing functions", reports Efe news "Even the edges of the network, where there's computing going on, are going to be highly sensitive and those parts should not be provided by high-risk vendors," Strayer said, noting that the EU established three criteria for identifying a high-risk vendor. The most important criteria, according to the US … [Read more...] about US urges Europe to exclude Huawei from 5G networks

There has been little research on the effect of "pro-ana" Web sites, and what there is shows no cause for alarm. A 2006 study, "Surfing for Thinness," published in the journal Pediatrics, examined nearly 700 families of patients diagnosed with eating disorders. Among their conclusions, "Pro-eating disorder site users did not differ from non-users in health outcomes," and those visiting "pro-ana" Web sites were not hospitalized any more often than those visiting Web sites promoting healthy recovery. … [Read more...] about Thinspiration: Do Web Sites Encourage Anorexia?
There is no way to physically "screen" models for anorexia. Instead, the women would be asked a series of questions, which—like drug use or any other topic the model may not want to admit to—could be easily evaded. It is possible to determine if the models are malnourished, but that doesn't settle the issue. While thinness is often associated with malnutrition, many thin (even anorexic) people are properly nourished—and even obese people can be malnourished. … [Read more...] about Real Problems Hidden Behind Thin Fashion Models
After dinner last night, I lost my usual self-control and ate half a box of cookies. No wonder. My self-control had been under pressure all day. I righteously refused a muffin at breakfast, didn’t scream at my kid to get out the door although we were late, made a conscious decision not to run over a pedestrian crossing against the light, kept my fist from pounding on the table during a faculty meeting, and resisted the urge to throw an annoying student out of my office. But by 7 p.m., my self-control mechanism was worn out, and down those cookies went. The empty box would have been no surprise to Yale University psychologist Joshua Ackerman and colleagues who have discovered that self-control not only wears us down, even thinking about other people's self-control is too much to handle. In the latest issue of the journal Psychological Science, the researchers taunted subjects with the story of a waiter who was … [Read more...] about Losing It: Why Self-Control Is Not Natural
