The iOSphere this past week wondered at the prospect of iPhone 6 with a Supercharged Siri, an all-knowing, all-doing software entity that will manage your iOS life for you. Eventually, probably in iOS 9, Siri will offer psychotherapy. The Bummer of the Week was a confused, and confusedly reported, rumor that Apple is negotiating with carriers to raise the iPhone 6 price by $100. Why Apple would need carrier by-in to price its smartphone was unclear. The rumor resulted in something rarely seen: cheers for the carriers, who according to the Wall Street analyst who floated the context-less rumor, were supposedly resisting the hike.Bloggers and tech websites also eagerly sifted through anonymous photos of third-party phone cases, “specially designed for the iPhone 6,” and bigger batteries that, although they could be for any smartphone, if you think of them as being for the iPhone 6, show that the iPhone body would have to be larger, too. It’s simple really. You read it here … [Read more...] about iPhone 6 rumor rollup for the week ending April 18
The iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S6 basically have two things in common: They're the smartphone measuring sticks for the rest of the industry, and they represent a fairly big departure from their predecessors. The iPhone 6 finally gives Apple fans a bigger 4.7-inch display, as well as new capabilities, such as Apple Pay. For Samsung, the Galaxy S6 represents a fresh start for the brand, with an all-new, glass-and-metal design (no more plastic!).But Apple's and Samsung's flagships are totally different in most other ways, from processing power and screen quality to cameras, interface and battery life. I put the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6 through nine rounds of handset-to-handset combat to name a winner. Credit: Jeremy Lips / Tom's GuideDesign has always been a hallmark of the iPhone, and the iPhone 6 maintains that tradition. Made of anodized aluminum, stainless steel and glass, the latest iPhone has rounded edges and a smooth but sturdy body. iPhone 6 and Note 4 The Michael Bay of gadgets, Apple keeps pumping out popular smartphones every year, despite a lack of fresh ideas. This year's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have finally appropriated popular concepts such as HD screens and NFC communications that Android users have enjoyed since at least 2012. At the same time, Apple's biggest rival isn't standing still. Samsung recently announced the Galaxy Note 4, a cutting-edge sequel to last year's mind-blowing Note 3, complete with a higher resolution screen, faster processor and even better pen support. The first reviews of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are in and, as with most Apple products, they're generally quite positive. However, no matter what you think of how the new handsets performance, there are at least six major ways that the Note 4 beats the iPhone 6 and the larger 6 Plus. 1. Larger, Higher Resolution ScreenLike a 21-year-old high school junior, Apple was stuck in a time warp for years, pumping out 4-inch … [Read more...] about 6 Ways Galaxy Note 4 Beats iPhone 6
I never thought I needed an iPhone, until I did — until all my friends had them and I listened to music all day, every day, everywhere. But that was three years ago, and now I'm thoroughly bored and almost stifled by Apple smartphones. After about a month of owning my iPhone 6, I found myself loathing iOS's lack of freedom, limiting hardware and software, and boring ecosystem. Here's why my next smartphone will run Android.Android Is More CustomizableOne of the biggest reasons I loved iPhones was iOS. It's clean and efficient, and when iOS 7 launched in 2013, it was downright beautiful. Now, while it remains minimalist and lovely, it's not exciting anymore. After using and reviewing Android phones at Tom's Guide, I find myself drawn to Android Lollipop and the options it gives me, along with brand-specific software features, to customize my smartphone experience.Currently, my ideal Android phone would be a Moto X or a Nexus 6, which use stock Android to its fullest. I really love … [Read more...] about I Regret My iPhone 6, Now I Want Android
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are larger than any iPhones before, and because of this, it's increasingly harder to use the devices one-handed. Fortunately, Apple has included a feature called Reachability that makes one-handed use a bit easier. Through this feature, you can easily readjust the screen so that all of the content is reachable. Let's take a look at how to use this new feature on your iPhone 6. Reachability lets you bring items at the top of the screen on your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus into finger's reach. Once activated, the entire contents of the iPhone screen will shift downward, providing easier reach for top buttons and more. There are some caveats with this feature, however:While Reachability is enabled, you cannot access the keyboard in the application. While Reachability is enabled, you won't be able to utilize the lower-half of the application, as the entire screen is forced downward. You cannot use this feature on the iOS lock screen to access music … [Read more...] about Pro tip: Use your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus one-handed with Reachability
Read also Part 1 of the iPhone 6 Overview. Though Apple’s cameras have known to be quite sturdy and efficient yet they have seen little revolution over the years and the excitement which is now demanded by customers was missing from the camera setup till iPhone 5s. But since we all know that Apple does bring improvement with every new phone, the iPhone 6 is sure to receive a bump and it is going to feature a 10-megapixel variety, with f/1.8 aperture and will feature better optical image stabilization (OIS) and faster autofocus. The front panel of the phone was recently leaked and it suggested that the front is going to look somewhat like the 5s but since the screen is quite large, it manages to look different. This one particular feature has established itself quite a lot in the first few months of its existence and now we are expecting a few customary improvements to iPhone 6 Touch ID fingerprint sensor, with better "efficiency" having been mentioned in several reports. How Apple … [Read more...] about A Complete Overview Of The Upcoming IPhone 6 (Part 2)
Another week brings more rumors of an iPhone 6 with a bigger screen; this time around the skinny from a Chinese analyst is that the next Apple superphone will arrive in two larger sizes — 4.7 and 5.7 inches, and as soon as Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference typically held each June.If the next iPhones are indeed taller, as everyone seems to believe they will be, it will mark yet another major product release in which Apple without Steve Jobs plays catch up rather than blazing a new trail of bold, design-led innovation. I mean, that iPhone 5S fingerprint reader is neat, but not exactly world-changing.In the past few years, we’ve seen Apple follow market trends by releasing a smaller iPad more similar to a Kindle Fire or Google Nexus 7 and diversify their smartphone offerings with the less-expensive iPhone 5C. Next up in this pattern: The release of a larger iPhone 6 to better compete with Samsung’s smartphone lineup. But this isn’t an Apple-bashing … [Read more...] about Time Has Come For Bigger IPhone 6
Can a phablet replace a tablet? The iPhone 6 Plus is a huge, new 5.5-inch (14 centimeters) smartphone that absolutely dwarfs last year's 4-inch (10.2 cm) iPhone 5s. The device debuted this month alongside the iPhone 6, a midsize, 4.7-inch (12 cm) phone. But it's the iPhone 6 Plus that can really give business users a boost, with a massive screen that's big enough for screen-intensive tasks like editing a spreadsheet, but a body that's still small enough to fit into most pants pockets. It's Apple's first phablet, a device that's bigger than the average smartphone, but smaller than the average tablet. So where does that leave the iPad mini with Retina display, the 7.9-inch (20 cm) tablet that used to be the middle ground between the compact iPhone and the larger, 9.7-inch (24.6 cm) iPad air? Does the introduction of the iPhone 6 Plus make the iPad mini obsolete? Read on for a feature-for-feature matchup between the iPhone 6 Plus and the iPad mini with Retina … [Read more...] about iPhone 6 Plus vs. iPad Mini with Retina Display: Which is Better for Business?
