North Korea, which has a reputation for isolationism as opposed to connectivity, has activated a new 3G mobile Internet network called Koryolink geared primarily for foreigners to access the web, text, tweet and upload photos and video. North Korean citizens, who are governed differently than foreigners, can use Koryolink to text and read official state news, but not to access the larger global web — provided they can afford the fairly expensive service in the first place. The country's government recently allowed foreigners to bring their own mobile phones from abroad as a precursor to the network's activation, according to the Associated Press . Reporters inside North Korea have been among the first to benefit from Koryolink. The Associated Press' Jean Lee is one of the first journalists to use the network by tweeting and sending perhaps the first Instagram photos via mobile data signals in the country: My first tweet using #Koryolink 's new mobile #Internet … [Read more...] about Instagrams Flow as North Korea Activates New Mobile Internet

Apple and Samsung to roll out China mobile payments, but Alipay stands in the way
Two phone giants have announced they will roll out mobile payments services in China in 2016. Both Apple and Samsung made announcements on Friday that they will bring their mobile payment services — Apple Pay and Samsung Pay — to users in the world's most populous country. To make this happen, they've inked separate deals with China UnionPay, the country's interbank network, so their services will be extended to account holders with most of the banks in the country. China has big ideas for the internet. Too bad no one else likes them
This story is part of Generation China , CNET's series exploring the nation's technological ambition. China wants a shiny new internet -- and you may like what the country has in mind. Its plan promises a network fast enough to show you as a live hologram in a video chat, secure enough to block data deluge attacks that crush websites, flexible enough to easily accommodate Elon Musk's Starlink satellite-powered broadband and responsive enough to let you drive a car remotely.
