APPLE could be making a major change to the charging port on future iPhone models, potentially making current power cables redundant. A new rumour about Apple's 2019 handsets suggests that the fruity firm will follow the lead of rival phone makers, and adopt a new USB Type-C port. When the first iPhone launched in 2007, it featured a charging port designed from the ground up by Apple. This was called the 30-pin dock connector, and survived on Apple handsets for years. But in 2012, Apple introduced a new Lightning port for charging phones (from the iPhone 4 onwards), making everybody's old charging cables useless. Now six years on, it looks like Apple is getting ready to replace your Lightning port too. According to tech industry site Digitimes, future Apple iPhones are "likely to support USB-C". The report reads: "Apple is redesigning chargers and related interface for its next-generation iPhone and iPad devices." It added that Apple "will likely have its 2019 series of iPhones come … [Read more...] about Your iPhone charging cable could be changing AGAIN – here’s what you need to know about USB-C

SAMSUNG could be bulking up its next flagship smartphone, according to a new leak. The size boost means that the hotly rumoured Samsung Galaxy S9 spin-off may have an ever bigger screen than Apple's £999 iPhone X. Last month, a regulatory filing in China revealed that Samsung was working on a surprise smartphone that hasn't yet been announced. The handset is believed to be an upgraded version of the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S9 – featuring more powerful hardware. Now a top mobile tipster has revealed that the mysterious 'SM-G8850' blower could feature a massive 6.3-inch screen. It's worth noting that Samsung typically reserves 'SM-G' model numbers for Galaxy S phones – the flagship handset range. The current Galaxy S9 only has a 5.8-inch display, and the larger Galaxy S9+ is 6.2 inches. That means Samsung's next handset could be much bigger than both the iPhone 8 Plus (5.5 inches) and the pricey iPhone X (5.8 inches). Phone makers have gradually bumped the size … [Read more...] about Samsung’s next Galaxy smartphone tipped to be even BIGGER than iPhone X

NOT all Samsung phones are born equal – so you may have been ripped off if you bought your new Galaxy S9 in the UK. New tests have revealed that Britain's version of the £739 smartphone may have worse battery life compared to the American model. In fact, any Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ smartphone bought in Europe may have the same issue. Technology blog AnandTech tested European and American versions of the latest Samsung smartphone. And the results were shocking. When web browsing on Wi-Fi, the American version of the phone managed 10.48 hours of battery life – but the European model died after just 6.8 hours. There's almost always a difference in performance and battery life between American and European Samsung Galaxy S9 phones. That's because the South Korean tech giant uses different processors for each model. For the American model, Samsung uses chips built by US firm Qualcomm – specifically the Snapdragon 845. But in the UK and Europe, Samsung opts for its own … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy S9 battery life may be WORSE if you bought the phone in the UK
Mobile World Congress finished in Barcelona for another year on Thursday (1 March). After five days of announcements, new phones and teasers of 5G cellular speeds, tech fans will have to wait until Apple's rumoured iPad unveil later this month for some more news. And like any major event, there were winners and losers. Here are some of the winners and losers of Mobile World Congress in 2018:Winner: Vivo Vivo had to be the biggest winner of MWC. When it announced its concept Apex phone, the internet went crazy. The nearly-all screen front (which is bragged about on most phones, but Vivo really did get close) looks incredible. No notch, no bezels, just screen. What about the speaker and selfie camera you ask? Sound emits from the phone by the glass panel vibrating. Reports say it produces an average sound quality - not good, not bad. The front-facing camera has been hidden in the phone and can extend out of the top on demand. A nifty little trick that promises selfies aren't going … [Read more...] about Winners and losers of the smartphone battle at Mobile World Congress 2018

MWC 2018 starts on Monday, though most of the big press conferences we've been waiting for will be held on the Sunday before everything kicks off. We outline what new products to expect from the consumer tech scene's biggest names. The star of the show is undoubtedly going to be the Samsung Galaxy S9, despite the fact it isn't set to be all that different from the Galaxy S8. We're also hoping for some hands-on time with the Nokia 9 and a new Sony flagship that for now we'll call the Sony Xperia XZ1 Premium (who knows with Sony). Motorola will probably be focused on its budget smartphones, and we could see a trio of G6 devices. Sadly, Huawei, HTC, Xiaomi and LG will not be announcing their flagships at this year's show. Apple, Google and Microsoft will also be absent from the show. Samsung at MWC 2018 The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be announced at a Samsung Unpacked conference at 6pm CET (5pm UK time) on Sunday 25 February (see how to watch here). We have to say … [Read more...] about What to Expect at MWC 2018 from Samsung, LG, HTC, Nokia, Huawei & More
