What just happened? Officials at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are urging users to reboot their routers. The public service announcement says that hundreds of thousands of home and office devices have been compromised by “foreign cyber actors. The cyber attack targets routers from several different manufacturers and at least one NAS brand is also vulnerable. The attackers used VPNFilter malware to infect the devices. The software has a variety of capabilities including data collection, remote shutdown, and analysis and detection countermeasures using encryption and “misattributable networks.” “The size and scope of the infrastructure impacted is significant,” says the alert. “The initial infection vector for this malware is currently unknown.” The FBI advises power cycling routers and NAS devices to disrupt the malware. Rebooting can aid in identifying infected systems. It also recommends users disable remote management settings, … [Read more...] about PSA from the FBI recommends all users reboot their routers

What does the future of fake news look like? No one really knows, but here’s a little sampler from Jordan Peele and BuzzFeed, who teamed up to make the above PSA. Using some of the latest AI techniques, Peele ventriloquizes Barack Obama, having him voice his opinion on Black Panther (“Killmonger was right”) and call President Donald Trump “a total and complete dipshit.” The video was made by Peele’s production company using a combination of old and new technology: Adobe After Effects and the AI face-swapping tool FakeApp. The latter is the most prominent example of how AI can facilitate the creation of photorealistic fake videos. It started life on Reddit as a tool for making fake celebrity porn, but it has since become a worrying symbol of the power of AI to generate misinformation and fake news. Yes, we’ve had software to create fakes for a while, but AI makes the whole process easier. Researchers have developed tools that let you perform … [Read more...] about Watch Jordan Peele use AI to make Barack Obama deliver a PSA about fake news
Home / News / PSA: Galaxy S9 and S9+ aren’t set to maximum screen resolution by default A few years ago, it wasn’t hard to find people supporting manufacturers for moving to Quad HD resolution (2560×1440 pixels) on smartphone displays, saying that the increased resolution makes a difference compared to the Full HD displays we’d been used to at the time. Many Samsung fans were of the same opinion, but the company itself accepted the fact that Full HD (1080p) is enough for the vast majority of users by setting the Galaxy S8 and S8+ displays to Full HD+ (the + denotes the slightly extended vertical resolution for the taller display) out of the box. It’s something Samsung continued with the Galaxy Note 8, and yes, it’s the same for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.Galaxy S9 and S9+ aren’t set to maximum screen resolution by defaultSamsung’s primary reason for setting the display to Full HD+ (2280×1080 pixels) by default is apparently … [Read more...] about PSA: Galaxy S9 and S9+ aren’t set to maximum screen resolution by default
Home / News / PSA: You cannot create shortcuts to apps in Secure Folder in Android Oreo Secure Folder is one of the most underrated features on Samsung smartphones. It’s an encrypted, private space on your Galaxy smartphones to separate work-related data and apps from your personal stuff. It can also be used to install permission-hungry apps or store private files in a separate container to add an extra layer of privacy and security to your data.In Nougat and earlier versions, users can long press an app in the Secure Folder and create a shortcut to that app on their home screen. With the shortcut option, users were able to access apps in the Secure Folder directly from their home screen instead of launching the Secure Folder first. An extra step required to launch Secure Folder appsAfter receiving the Android Oreo update, many users have noticed the disappearance of their Secure Folder shortcuts. What many of them assumed to be a bug seems to be a deliberate decision by … [Read more...] about PSA: You cannot create shortcuts to apps in Secure Folder in Android Oreo
Home / News / PSA: Remember to enable Dolby Atmos on your Galaxy S9! You’d think that after taking so many years to bring stereo speakers to its flagship lineup, Samsung would ensure the audio experience offered by those speakers was the best it could be out of the box. Yet, on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, an important feature related to the audio experience, both through the loudspeakers and the AKG-tuned earphones, comes disabled by default. We’re talking about Dolby Atmos, as you would have guessed after reading the title, and we’re here to remind you to turn Dolby Atmos on if you’ve purchased a Galaxy S9 or S9+ and have just been going with the flow without realizing that Dolby Atmos has to be manually enabled.Dolby Atmos makes a world of differenceAnd what a difference it makes. On the loudspeakers, you can instantly notice how the audio is better spaced out over the two speakers, further enhancing the stereo effect. On the already excellent AKG … [Read more...] about PSA: Remember to enable Dolby Atmos on your Galaxy S9!
Home / News / PSA: Galaxy S9 and S9+ come with a free case in the box in some markets Well, we have only been able to confirm that Samsung is offering a case in the box with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in one market, but it’s likely it’s the case (pun intended) in a few other markets as well. Samsung India seems to have kicked off this trend, no doubt to compete with some Chinese OEMs who have also been offering free cases with smartphones in the country for a long time. The Galaxy Note 8 was the first to come with a case in the box, followed by devices like the Galaxy A8+ (2018) and the Galaxy On7 Prime, and there’s a case in the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ box as well.Galaxy S9 and S9+ come with a free case in the box in some marketsThe Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ haven’t started shipping in India and many other markets, but once you do get your device, don’t forget to check the document holder to see if there’s a case inside. Home / News / PSA: Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ can also take regular slow-motion videos Super slow-mo video recording, or slow-motion videos at 960 frames per second, isn’t something introduced to smartphones by the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Sony was the first to offer such a feature. Samsung’s super slow-mo feature on its new flagships works the same way as Sony’s, but given the much higher consumer reach of the company’s Galaxy S line, we can expect other manufacturers to finally jump on the bandwagon (especially with Samsung selling its latest camera sensor to other companies). Samsung has also added a neat trick: The Galaxy S9 and S9+ can automatically record super slow-motion video when they detect movement, allowing you to just set up the phone, tap the record button, and let the camera do the rest.In fact, Samsung seems to be so proud of super slow-mo that it has hidden away the option to record regular slow-motion videos (240 frames per second). Not … [Read more...] about PSA: Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ can also take regular slow-motion videos
Funny Or Die has released a #MeToo-inspired PSA, that's intensely uncomfortable. Starring Westworld's Evan Rachel Wood, Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Kelly Marie Tran, Tony nominee Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and a voice-over from Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany, the video attempts to engage with the #MeToo campaign against systemic sexual abuse in Hollywood. Using a Guess Who game. Yeah. Featuring game "characters" Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Terry Richardson, Kevin Spacey, Louis CK, and numerous other men who have been accused of sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct. It seems flippant but it's a genuine PSA, directed by an all-female crew and calling for people to join Rise, a national civil rights nonprofit working to implement a Sexual Assault Survivors' Bill of Rights. Wood testifies with Rise on behalf of sexual assault survivors in Capitol Hill on Feb. 27 — hence the timing of the skit. Still uncomfortable, though. Jennifer Lawrence knocks back 3 rum shots in 9 minutes in … [Read more...] about Watch Funny Or Die’s uncomfortable #MeToo PSA starring Evan Rachel Wood
