The Trump administration today announced a new proposal to reverse Obama-era regulations that limit how much methane, a potent greenhouse gas, the oil and natural gas industries are allowed to emit. The Environmental Protection Agency's proposed amendments would "remove unnecessary regulatory duplication" put into place in 2016, according to a press release. The proposals made today are separate from and in addition to a 2018 proposed rule that eased methane reporting and monitoring requirements for oil- and gas-extraction businesses. The proposed plan (PDF) would "rescind emissions limits for methane from the production and processing segments of the industry," the EPA says. The proposal would also remove parts of the transmission and storage segments of the oil and gas industry—generally called the midstream business—from being subject to regulation, by claiming the agency was out of line when it added sources such as transmission compressor stations, … [Read more...] about Trump admin. announces plan to kill 2016 methane emissions limits

Metformin is a prescription drug used primarily in the treatment of Type II diabetes. It can be used on its own or combined with other medications. In the United States, it is sold under the brand names Fortamet, Glucophage, Glumetza and Riomet. "Metformin is very often prescribed as the first step in a diabetic's regime," said Ken Sternfeld, a New York-based pharmacist. How it works"When you're diabetic you lose the ability to use the insulin you need to offset the food," Sternfeld explained. "If you eat a carb or sugar that can't be metabolized or offset by the insulin you produce, your sugar levels will be higher. Metformin and drugs in that category will help your body better metabolize that food so that insulin levels will be able to stay more in line."Metformin aims to decrease glucose production in the liver, consequently lowering the levels of glucose in the bloodstream. It also changes the way that your blood cells react to insulin. "It makes them more sensitive to … [Read more...] about What is Metformin?
Americans have less trans fat floating around in their blood today than they did 10 years ago, a new study finds.Between 2000 and 2009, the average level of trans fatty acids in the blood dropped 58 percent, according to the study of white adults in the U.S.The drop may be good news for Americans' health. Because trans fats have been linked to increased cholesterol levels and risk for heart disease, lower blood levels could mean a decrease in cardiovascular disease, the researchers said.Exactly what caused the drop is unclear, but the researchers noted that trans fats are often found in manufactured foods, and in 2003, the Food and Drug Administration began to require that food products list their trans fat content on their nutrition labels. In addition, around that time, manufacturers started to remove trans fats from their foods, and there was an increase in educational information about the health risks of these fats, said study researcher Hubert Vesper, of the Centers for Disease … [Read more...] about US Adults’ Trans Fat Drops
The problem with being a safety-conscious, responsible drone operator is that it's much easier to actually fly the drone than it is to comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules. If we're ever going to have instant Amazon Prime Air deliveries, Domino's Pizza drones, and other flying robot helpers, complying with those rules needs to get easier—it also needs to get automated. At the recent Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) Xponential conference in New Orleans, Amazon Prime Air Vice President Gur Kimchi outlined Amazon's vision for how that might look. Kimchi and Amazon propose an approach that uses "federated" traffic control—the sharing of information between air traffic control systems, operators, and drones themselves to enable a safer yet more crowded sky. The groundwork for such a system is already being laid—in part thanks to software developed by a Santa Monica, California, company called AirMap. AirMap has … [Read more...] about By mapping the skies, AirMap app paves the way to a drone-filled future
