Cloud is becoming an imperative for many organisations, driven by the C-suite as they realise its potential to provide business benefits. Their IT team know that moving to cloud, like any other major IT transformation, is not a quick fix but requires strategic planning. They need to move to cloud in a staged manner whilst continuing to deliver what the business requires without interruption and avoiding any unpleasant surprises or unforeseen costs along the way. The question they face is: which applications to move first? Should they start with the ‘easy’ ones such as desktop productivity applications, which for the majority of organisations will be Microsoft Office, or begin with their largest applications such as their ERP systems and work systematically through to the small niche applicationsAs with any strategy question, there is no one size fits all solution. However, there is a simple way to work out the priorities for your organisation in order to create a … [Read more...] about Which applications should drive your cloud strategy?
The need to manage applications on unmanaged devices owned by employees or contractors is driving adoption of stand-alone mobile app management (MAM) software and services, according to a new Gartner report. By 2021, 60% of mobile apps being used in the enterprise will rely on at least one app-level management control, whether on managed or unmanaged devices, Gartner's Market Guide for Mobile Application Management said. Unlike MAM tools that are part of a larger enterprise mobility management (EMM) suite, the use of stand-alone MAM licensing offers lower per-user cost and can be attractive for companies only requiring app management, Gartner said. For other firms, EMM provides the advantage of a single console and policy set. Often a SaaS offering, MAM is a targeted solution that locks down enterprise applications and the data associated with them – not the devices themselves, as mobile device management (MDM) does. When MAM is part of a larger EMM suite, businesses are often … [Read more...] about Mobile app management is being driven by unmanaged devices
The footprints of enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM) systems seem to overlap — they both handle contacts and companies and lots of details about orders. Indeed, several ERP vendors claim that CRM, HR and the scheduling of executive golf outings are part of the ERP domain. Consequently, there is sufficient vagueness and confusion on these topics to …ahem… cloud the issue. Since there’s not much confusion about who uses ERP vs. CRM systems, let’s start there. The main users of CRM systems are in the sales and support organizations – they are ultimately customer-facing and they don’t do the actual work of producing and fulfilling orders (they just yell at the people who do that). In contrast, the ERP users are focused on the process and logistics of producing the widgets: factory managers, production schedulers, buyers, supply chain types and finance types. ERP users are … [Read more...] about CRM vs ERP: What’s the difference and which do you need?

CIOs realize that to speed the launch of new business applications they must abandon the slow, rigid, old-school waterfall style of application development and adopt DevOps. This philosophy promises shorter development cycles and faster delivery through the use of agile software-creation tools and the melding of development and operations teams. That's a tall order, and it becomes especially daunting when IT executives first encounter the head-spinning world of DevOps.Unfamiliar terms include toolchains and pipelines; new concepts can include containers, microservices and serverless computing. This is not to mention the dizzying variety of open source tools with names like Puppet and Chef."A big chunk of the Fortune 500 has acknowledged that change needs to happen," said Chris Riley, DevOps analyst at FixateIO a provider of testing and documentation services, "but it's been implemented by very few."The good news is that the somewhat chaotic world of DevOps tools gained a measure of … [Read more...] about The World of DevOps Tools Can Make a Newbie’s Head Spin
