An Intel effort to pair the company's processors with integrated graphics from AMD is officially coming to an end. On Tuesday, Intel quietly issued a product notice, saying it was discontinuing the company's Kaby Lake-G processors, which were born from a rare team-up between the chip maker and rival AMD. Back in Nov. 2017, Intel announced it was creating a special line of chips for PC gaming hardware that would pack an Intel Core H-series processor with a "Vega M" GPU chip from AMD's Radeon group, which is best known for creating dedicated graphics cards. Although the partnership took the chip industry by surprise, the resulting Kaby Lake-G processors were powerful, offering Core i7 performance and some impressive AMD-backed graphic capabilities on a single chip. In 2018, Intel began introducing the Kaby Lake-G processors into PC models such as the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 convertible laptop and Intel's own "Next Unit of Computing (NUC)" line of mini-PC desktops. However, the processors … [Read more...] about Intel Ends Kaby Lake-G Chips, Which Had AMD Radeon GPUs

Microsoft has been improving many different areas of the Windows 10 experience recently, and the upcoming Anniversary Update will add even more new features, but there is one variant of Windows 10 that hasn't received as much attention: Windows 10 Mobile. Windows chief Terry Myerson, speaking to The Verge, stated at Build 2016 that Windows 10 Mobile is not a focus for Microsoft over the coming year. According to him, the mobile variant of Windows is "part of the family but it's not the core of where I hope to generate developer interest over the next year." Myerson even admitted that the user base of Windows 10 Mobile isn't significant enough: "if you wanted to reach a lot of phone customers, Windows Phone isn't the way to do it." Instead, the best way to reach customers is by developing apps for 9 to 30-inch screens (in other words, tablet, laptop and desktop users), while Xbox and HoloLens provide platforms to do "new and exciting things". These statements from Myerson highlight why … [Read more...] about Windows 10 Mobile isn’t a focus for Microsoft in 2016
Microsoft is a bonafide tech behemoth with its tentacles spread across the technological universe. However, there’s one where it is conspicuously absent and it still rankles it co-founder and one of the world’s richest man, Bill Gates. That area is a mobile operating system and according to a report by CNBC, Gates shed some light on why the company missed that boat. Speaking at a conference in New York, Gates cited the antitrust case filed by the US government in the 90s against Microsoft as a primary reason. “There’s no doubt the antitrust lawsuit was bad for Microsoft, and we would have been more focused on creating the phone operating system,” Gates said, as per the report by CNBC. He further said that “instead of using Android today, you would be using Windows Mobile if it hadn’t been for the antitrust case.” The report also states that Gates said that he was “too distracted". “I was just too distracted. I screwed that … [Read more...] about Bill Gates on why he ‘messed’ up Microsoft’s mobile business
Following reports last week that Microsoft and Mojang were in "serious discussions" about a multibillion dollar acquisition, the two have now made it official. In a deal valued at $2.5 billion, the maker of the massively popular sandbox building game will be joining Microsoft’s game studio division. Mojang also announced that founders Markus "Notch" Persson, Carl Manneh, and Jakob Porser are leaving after the acquisition comes to a close. The news is somewhat surprising given Persson has been critical of Microsoft in the past, shunning its Windows Phone platform for being tiny and not worth developing apps for. But ultimately it came down Minecraft’s exploding popularity and Notch not wanting the responsibility of running it. Explaining the reasoning behind the move, Mojang wrote in a blog post: As you might already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder at Mojang. He’s decided that he doesn’t want the responsibility of owning a … [Read more...] about It’s official: Microsoft acquires Minecraft creator Mojang for $2.5 billion
