As specified by Microsoft, to use Cortana on Xbox One you either need to have a Kinect or a headset microphone. As much as I love Kinect, it can be expensive to purchase as a standalone device, particularly since it's no longer in production. Since the new Xbox One S comes with an IR blaster built in, you may find yourself even less likely to want a Kinect unit. Additionally, if you have invested in a dedicated sound system, donning a headset just for Cortana might seem a little counter-intuitive and silly. Related: Is Kinect still worth buying in 2018? But if you have the revised Xbox One controller with a built-in 3.5mm headset jack, there's an easy and cheap method for activating Cortana voice commands on Xbox One. Amazon is crammed with mini-microphones designed for use on smartphones with dictation software. Thanks to the standardized 3.5mm jack, the Xbox One will detect these discrete mics as a headset. Attaching them to your controller will allow you to activate Cortana … [Read more...] about This cheap little add-on lets you enable Cortana on Xbox One

New controller announcements these days tend to be focused on courting high-end “power” players, offering refined construction and detailed customization features aimed at the most discerning, hardcore gamers. Microsoft took a step back from the esports arms race, however, to support an even more discerning group of gamers that has been woefully under-served, players with physical disabilities for whom using a standard controller is either difficult or impossible. It was widely praised last month when it announced the Xbox Adaptive Controller, a gamepad alternative developed with radical accessibility in mind — an approach to design that fundamentally rethinks what a controller can be in order to allow for a wider range of players than you might ever think possible. We got to take a look at the Adaptive Controller out in person at E3 2018, and it’s like no controller we’ve ever seen. The main unit is a rectangle with two huge, round buttons (by default … [Read more...] about Microsoft explains the past, present, and future of the Xbox Adaptive Controller

Custom gaming hardware is becoming increasingly accessible across the Xbox One family, with various consoles and accessories available directly through Microsoft. While special edition controllers from Microsoft offer some truly outstanding designs, programs like Xbox Design Lab provide a truly personal twist to the standard controller. While Microsoft offers its own range of official custom consoles, the closed nature of the platform means there's little flexibility beyond the paint job. While incremental upgrades like the Xbox One X and Xbox One S provide more options, there's still not the benefits seen on open platforms like PC. It might not be likely but one Windows Central forum user pitched a unique idea – a modular Xbox One with configurable hardware and cosmetics. As always, we want to hear your thoughts on the topic. Would you like to see a configurable range of Xbox One consoles? Or does the simplicity of the system define Xbox for you? Xbox One has received a unique new feature for streamers, as a part of the Xbox Spring Update. Following recent improvements to Microsoft's Mixer live streaming platform, its interactive offerings between broadcasters and audiences continue to expand. Mixer "controller sharing" builds upon the service's interactive roots, allowing viewers to directly control a streamer's gameplay. I’ve spent hours pretending to be a pirate, eating bananas in a peculiar fashion, smiling until I cried, and getting drunk to the point of dizziness — all with the help of an Xbox controller. British video game developer Rare, creator of classics like Battletoads, GoldenEye 007, and Banjo-Kazooie, has moved in a new direction with the upcoming pirate game Sea of Thieves. The studio has been stuck making Kinect games for Microsoft’s discontinued Xbox accessory in recent years, and Sea of Thieves is an impressive return to form. It’s been teased for years, and it sets sail next month as Microsoft’s big new Xbox One and PC exclusive where console players can battle PC gamers for buried treasure. Sea of Thieves is a refreshingly ambitious game, aiming to tempt players into a big, open world multiplayer environment where you can get attacked by rival pirate ships, fired upon by skeletons from islands you’re passing by, or be snatched from your … [Read more...] about Sea of Thieves is huge, fun, and just what the Xbox One needs
