Small and medium businesses (SMBs) have been among the worst hit during the pandemic. But they have time and again proven to be agile and resilient. It's expected to be no different this time. And experts say if they digitise to improve customer experience, and to make their procurement processes more efficient, the next decade will be theirs. Cisco’s MD for its small business in India, Panish PK, says SMBs actually adopted digital tools at a faster clip during the pandemic than they ever did to scale their businesses and improve customer satisfaction. “SMBs are the bedrock of any economy. If SMBs have to sell to customers beyond their boundaries, digitalisation is the key,” Panish said at the Times Techies Webinar last week that was held in association with Cisco . There are 65 million SMBs in India. Most SMBs, Panish said, are more open to conversations that revolve around accelerating their digital roadmap compared to the pre-pandemic days. Before the pandemic, this was looked … [Read more...] about Small biz adopting tech faster than ever before

Joe Biden to press for $37 billion to boost chip manufacturing amid shortfall
President Joe Biden said on Wednesday he would seek $37 billion in funding for legislation to supercharge chip manufacturing in the United States as a shortfall of semiconductors has forced U.S. automakers and other manufacturers to cut production. Biden also signed an executive order on Wednesday aimed at addressing the global semiconductor chip shortage that has alarmed the White House and members of Congress, administration officials said. The scarcity, exacerbated by the pandemic , was also the subject of a discussion between Biden and a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers at the White House on Wednesday. "I'm directing senior officials in my administration to work with industrial leaders to identify solutions to the semiconductor shortfall," Biden said on Wednesday. "Congress has authorized a bill but they need ... $37 billion to make sure that we have this capacity. I'll push for that as well." The White House said his remarks were in reference to measures aimed at … [Read more...] about Joe Biden to press for $37 billion to boost chip manufacturing amid shortfall
New immunotherapy drugs target two evasive cancer-driving proteins
By Jocelyn Kaiser Mar. 1, 2021 , 11:00 AM Researchers have shown in mice that designer antibodies can curb the growth of tumors by targeting two of cancer’s most infamous offenders—the proteins RAS and p53, which are mutated in many tumors but have largely defied drug development efforts. If their promise holds up in clinical trials, such drugs could make it possible to unleash the body’s immune system on hard-to-treat cancers including pancreatic and ovarian. “It’s exciting,” says immunologist Jon Weidanz of the University of Texas, Arlington, who co-founded a company that works on similar immunotherapies, called bispecific antibodies. The new drugs can lock onto a few snippets of p53 or RAS jutting out from a tumor cell’s surface—and then trigger immune cells to attack them. “The therapies have the potential to work when there’s a really low number of the target on cells. That is a big deal,” says Weidanz, who wrote a commentary accompanying the papers. P53 is a tumor … [Read more...] about New immunotherapy drugs target two evasive cancer-driving proteins

Pot Science: Top Marijuana Findings of 2015
Researchers who study marijuana made a number of findings in 2015, from learning about the health effects of using the drug frequently and recreationally, to figuring out which diseases and conditions are most likely to benefit from the substance's use. The findings about marijuana that came out this year advanced the science, even if only incrementally, said Alan Budney, a professor of psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth in Lebanon, New Hampshire, who studies behavioral treatments for reducing or quitting marijuana use. "It was perhaps more of a year of identifying important questions in need of answers," he said. A current major area of research investigates how the changing laws in some states governing marijuana use will affect rates of the drug's use, including rates of problematic use, Budney said. "A study this year published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry raised lots of eyebrows when it found a doubling of marijuana use among American adults and … [Read more...] about Pot Science: Top Marijuana Findings of 2015
