HP has expanded its rebranding of Apple’s popular iPod digital music players by adding the iPod shuffle to its lineup. The iPod shuffle is a USB flash-based music player which can play back MP3, WAV, and Apple’s proprietary AAC audio format as well as audio books from Audible.com. (Like other iPods, the iPod shuffle does not support Windows Media or Real Media formats). The unit also offers its now-famous “shuffle mode” which randomly selects tracks for playback, and is managed using Apple’s iTunes jukebox software, which is available for Mac OS X as well as Windows 2000 and XP, and which also provides access to Apple’s iTunes Music Store, still the dominant player in digital music sales. The device also doubles as a USB flash drive for storing documents or other files, and boasts 12 hours of playback on a single charge. iPod shuffles are available immediately from HP to customers in the U.S. and Canada in two sizes: a 512 MB unit costs $99.99, … [Read more...] about HP Gets Groovy with Apple’s iPod shuffle
Is Apple granting touch treatment to the lowliest of iPods, the iPod Shuffle? Maybe, if the rumors are to be believed; and, unlikely as it may seem, a touchscreen iPod Shuffle is actually a good idea. Slideshow: iPhones and iPods on the Job: Creative UsesRumors of a possible 1.7-inch iPod Shuffle with a touchscreen comes from iLounge, which published a bunch of unsubstantiated details on upcoming Apple devices. My colleague, Ian Paul, already wrote at length about the likelihood of these rumors. But I wanted to take a moment to just want to focus on the iPod, because let's be honest, with all hoopla over iPads and iPhones, the music player's just not getting any love.To the gut, a tiny touchscreen iPod doesn't make much sense. We're talking about one quarter of the iPhone's screen real estate, and these days the trend in touchscreens is to go bigger, not smaller. But given the recent history of the iPod Shuffle, a touchscreen would be a logical transformation. With each new model, … [Read more...] about A Touchscreen IPod Shuffle Could Be a Cool Innovation

Apple's line of iPod products has taken a back seat to the iPhone, in a very big way in recent years. I can't really blame Apple for this, sales of iPod products have declined as most people opt for an iPhone instead. So the company has put its design, marketing and manufacturing efforts into the iPhone rather than the iPod products. But products like the iPod shuffle do offer an important alternative to the iPhone for some users. The iPod shuffle can be quite useful for workouts and other situations where handling or carrying an iPhone might be problematic. The iPod shuffle still offers just 2GB of storage. And there's no way to buy a model with more. For some users 2GB is fine, but others are irritated that Apple has not increased the iPod shuffle's storage. This issue recently got the attention of some Apple redditors, and they were not shy about sharing their thoughts about it:B1GEast: ”Apple has a history of neglecting product lines, simple as that.”D27A341: ”Yeah … [Read more...] about Does Apple’s iPod shuffle need more than 2GB of storage?

Apple released a little bit of a firestorm Thursday with the announcement of its newest iPod Shuffle. The company has shrunk the device to a magnifying-glass-not-included 1.8 by 0.7 by 0.3 inches, but to do so, it's been forced to remove almost all control functionality from the unit's body. You now control the random (or sequential) back-and-forth progression of songs, the volume, and Shuffle's pause features via a small control box on the included earphones.Apple released a little bit of a firestorm Thursday with the announcement of its newest iPod Shuffle. I’m on the record somewhere as saying that my favorite iPod of all time is the second-generation (2G) iPod shuffle. There was just something about that little guy, with its clip-on body and its circle of easy-to-navigate control buttons, that I found irresistible. I still have a battered old silver one that I take on trips and use when I’m mowing the lawn.On the other hand, the third-generation (3G) iPod shuffle introduced in March 2009 was an example of Apple’s design language taken to an extreme. Gone were the onboard controls of previous models: the 3G shuffle was a little metal nub with a headphone jack and a power switch, and not much else. Though it added support for multiple playlists and a nifty spoken navigation system, it also forced users to rely on a set of three-button headphones (a clicker, plus volume up and down buttons) to control the thing. I hated it.Now here’s the $49 fourth-generation (4G) iPod shuffle model, or (if you prefer) the second … [Read more...] about iPod shuffle (fourth generation, late 2010)
