This story is part of Crossing the Broadband Divide , CNET's coverage of how the country is working toward making broadband access universal. This week, 31-year-old Michelle from North Lanarkshire, Scotland, has access to the internet at home. But next week is already looking very different. Michelle's family has fallen behind with the broadband payments, and even though they managed to reconnect only last weekend, they'll be cut off again this Friday. Michelle (who prefers gender-neutral pronouns and whose name has been changed to protect their privacy), together with their partner and 13-year-old daughter, has been homeless since February of last year. They live in temporary accommodation, with Michelle supporting the family financially by working as a cleaner. "We've struggled with internet bills, we can't always afford data for my daughter's mobile either," Michelle said in an interview. "At the moment my daughter is doing schoolwork with mobile data and on her phone." … [Read more...] about In the UK, some families must choose between internet access and food

Joe Biden’s election will not undo Donald Trump interference in Huawei extradition case, lawyers say
Lawyers for Huawei 's chief financial officer said on Wednesday that Joe Biden 's election as U.S. president will not undo the political interference in her case, which they say stems from former President Donald Trump 's pledge to intervene if it helped the United States extract a more favorable trade deal from China. Lawyers for CFO Meng Wanzhou want her U.S. extradition case dismissed on grounds that Trump's comments soon after her 2018 arrest in Canada meant she would not get a fair trial in the United States. They further argued that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and then-foreign affairs minister Chrystia Freeland had also waded into the debate, proving politicization of Meng's case. Meng, 49, was arrested on a U.S. warrant for bank fraud at Vancouver International Airport in December 2018 and has since been living under house arrest while fighting extradition. She faces charges of bank fraud in the United States over misleading HSBC about Huawei Technologies … [Read more...] about Joe Biden’s election will not undo Donald Trump interference in Huawei extradition case, lawyers say
Eight-year-old Fortnite player given $33,000 and $5,000 PC for turning pro
WTF?! Imagine being eight years old and getting $33,000 along with a $5,000 PC after becoming a pro gamer. For Joseph Deen, better known as Gosu, this became a reality last December when he signed with eSports organization Team 33, making him the second-youngest professional gamer ever. California-based Deen has been playing Fortnite since he was four years old, and was first noticed by Team 33 , a relative unknown in the community, 18 months ago. "I've thought about being a professional gamer a lot, but no one took me seriously until Team 33 came along," he told the BBC. A Team 33 scout spotted Deen's talent and started playing one-on-one matches with the boy, eventually realizing that if they didn't sign him, someone else would. Fortnite is rated T (for Teen) by the ESRB and has a PEGI rating of 12, though anyone who's played a Call of Duty online match will know age ratings are rarely a deterrent to kids. However, his young age does mean he won't compete in Fortnite … [Read more...] about Eight-year-old Fortnite player given $33,000 and $5,000 PC for turning pro
QLED vs. OLED: Samsung and LG TV technologies explained
In 2021, the high-end TV landscape is just as confusing to new buyers as ever. There's a bunch of new televisions to consider, a raft of technical-sounding features -- 8K , HDR , Ultra HD 4K , 120Hz and HDMI 2.1 -- and a stable of familiar brand names competing for your dollar. Two of the biggest, Samsung and LG, use very similar terms to describe their best TVs , but Samsung's QLED and LG's OLED are as different as day and night. For the last few years, Samsung, the most popular TV maker in the world , has been branding its TVs "QLED." Its 2021 QLED lineup is massive, with Neo QLED models in 4K and 8K resolution, The Frame art TV , Serif and the Sero rotating TV all bearing the ubiquitous Q. Meanwhile, LG's 2021 OLED TVs include six series, from the relatively affordable A1 to the crazy-expensive 8K Z1 to, yes, a model that rolls up like a poster.
