Highly anticipated: It’s tough to keep a secret in the tech industry these days. Just ask Apple. After years of “didn’t see that coming” (or, at least, the hope of “One More Thing…”), it’s becoming increasingly rare for Apple to be able to pull off a genuine surprise at their big launch events, especially on the product side. Yesterday’s Spring Loaded event was no exception, with the debut of a widely anticipated new iPad Pro , AirTags location finders, Podcast service, and the svelte new iMacs . But while there may not have been any serious product surprises, there was a little bit of uncertainty about the direction and speed of its technical transition to Arm-powered devices. Those questions were completely put to rest, however, with the new iMac and iPad Pro announcements and the inclusion of the company’s self-designed M1 chip into both products. It’s now clear that Apple is not only committed to making the M1, and its subsequent Arm-powered processors, the core of all … [Read more...] about M1 Everywhere: Apple accelerates custom chip transition
Cross-play games are growing in number by the day, meaning that anyone hoping to play the latest FPS , MMO , or frantic cooking game with their friends online – regardless of the platform they're using – has more avenues to do so than ever. It’s never been easier to play with people all over the world. Some might not see the fuss around cross-play; after all, don’t you have enough people to play Call of Duty: Warzone with on just your PS4 ? But something as simple as cross-play can influence which hardware you pick up. After all, if your friends are playing on Xbox and you're playing on PlayStation, you want the option to play with them without having to buy an Xbox too. And it’s become increasingly clear that we have the technological ability to enable cross-platform games, especially as consoles – like the PS5 and Xbox Series X , or their PS4 and Xbox One predecessors – share increasingly similar processing architecture. More and more developers are opening up their … [Read more...] about Best cross-play games to play across console and PC
The Salton Sea has been completely dry before, and news reports now say it's drying up again . In fact, there shouldn't be any water there now anyway. The Salton Sea is not a sea at all. It is a lake in the heavily farmed Imperial Valley of Southern California. The salty sea is an odd, utterly huge expanse of water smack in the middle of the desert. The Salton Sea is the largest lake in California, at some 375 square miles (970 square km). Thing is, it didn't use to be there. Throughout geologic history, the basin has alternated between being a lake and a dry lakebed as the climate fluctuated over long time periods. Through modern history, it was bone dry. So how did the Salton Sea form? It was all a big mistake. In 1905, water from the Colorado River was diverted through the Alamo Canal to irrigate farmlands in the Imperial Valley, but huge precipitation and snow melt in the mountains that feed the Colorado sent a flood. The water broke through wooden gates in the … [Read more...] about Is the Salton Sea Drying Up?
China could launch the first module for its own space station this month as the country also prepares to send a large space telescope to join it in orbit within the next few years. The Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST), which is set to launch in 2024, will operate as a space optical observatory for Chinese scientists to carry out sky surveys, according to Xinhua .The telescope, sometimes called "Xuntian," which literally translates to "survey the heavens," will have an impressive 6.6-foot (2 meters) diameter lens, making it comparable to the Hubble Telescope Scope. However, it boasts a field of view 300 times greater than that of 31-year-old Hubble while retaining a similar resolution. The wide field of view will allow the telescope to observe up to 40 percent of the sky over ten years using a huge 2.5 billion pixel camera .Notably, the telescope will co-orbit Earth along with the Chinese space station and will be able to periodically dock with the future … [Read more...] about China wants to launch its own Hubble-class telescope as part of space station
