Amazon.com Inc said it is rolling out biometric technology at its Whole Foods stores around Seattle starting on Wednesday, letting shoppers pay for items with a scan of their palm. The move shows how Amazon is bringing some of the technology already in use at its namesake brick-and-mortar Go and Books stores to the grocery chain it acquired in 2017. The system, called Amazon One, lets customers associate a credit card with their palm print. It offers a contact-less alternative to cash and card payments, Amazon said. The deployment stops short of introducing Amazon's cashier-less technology at Whole Foods, which critics have said would result in job cuts. Amazon One still requires scanning items at checkout, and the company said it will not impact jobs at Whole Foods. Amazon said its biometric technology will be live at a Whole Foods near its headquarters in Seattle on Wednesday and will expand to seven more stores in the metro area in coming months. … [Read more...] about Amazon’s technology to let shoppers pay with a ‘palm-scan’

Utah passed a law making iPhones filter porn — but only if other states pass one, too
On March 24th, Utah’s governor signed a bill aimed at making mobile devices automatically filter pornography. The original article, written previously, follows. In the next week, Utah’s governor will decide whether to make all phones and tablets in the state filter pornography... sort of. The bill, which passed Utah’s legislature earlier this month, would require mobile devices to “automatically enable a filter capable of blocking material that is harmful to minors.” Gov. Spencer Cox has said he will “carefully consider” signing it by the March 25th deadline. But the rule won’t change anything in the immediate future — a fact one lawmaker even cited as a benefit. In theory, Utah’s H.B. 72 mandates active adult content filters on all smartphones and tablets sold in Utah. Phone makers would provide a passcode to let buyers disable the filter, although it’s not clear if they’d need to verify the buyer’s age beforehand. If a filter isn’t automatically enabled when a user … [Read more...] about Utah passed a law making iPhones filter porn — but only if other states pass one, too
Meet the Maker: Mr. Fascinate Encourages Kids to Get on the Cool Bus and Study STEM
STEM is dope. That’s the simple message that Justin “Mr. Fascinate” Shaifer evangelizes to young people around the world. Growing up on Chicago’s South Side, Shaifer didn’t know anyone with a career in STEM he could look up to — at least no one he could relate to. Now, he’s become that role model for thousands of kids, working to prove that STEM is cool and attainable for anyone who has a passion for it. About the Maker Shaifer is a STEM advocate, animator and TV host who educates students about the importance of STEM and diversity within it. He has a YouTube channel , gives keynote speeches and hosts the Escape Lab live … [Read more...] about Meet the Maker: Mr. Fascinate Encourages Kids to Get on the Cool Bus and Study STEM

BRUSSELS — British Prime Minister David Cameron has won a hard-fought deal for a less intrusive European Union after two days of tense talks with EU leaders, a commitment he said he needed to persuade UK voters the country should stay in the bloc.
