A US-based news organisation has filed a lawsuit against Facebook and Alphabet, the parent company of Google , alleging that the tech giants with their dominance over the digital advertising market adversely affected an important revenue source. The lawsuit makes the argument the Google and Facebook represent a digital monopoly that should be broken up, The Verge reported. "Google and Facebook have monopolised the digital advertising market thereby strangling a primary source of revenue for newspapers across the country," according to the complaint filed by HD Media. HD Media operates Charleston Gazette-Mail, The (Huntington) Herald-Dispatch and several other West Virginia newspapers. The organisation filed a complaint in the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. The complaint also alleges that Facebook and Google violated antitrust laws in the US by attempting to consolidate their dominance of the digital advertising market, striking … [Read more...] about Newspaper chain sues Google, Facebook over digital ad ‘monopoly’

Google, Facebook tell SCOTUS it should be harder for you to sue them
Suing technology firms when they mess up is already hard, especially over privacy violations. Now, Facebook, Google, and the trade groups representing all the big tech firms are asking the Supreme Court to make it even harder for class actions to pursue cases against them. Facebook, Google, and all the others submitted a filing ( PDF ) to the Supreme Court this week basically arguing that if you cannot prove the specific extent to which their screwup injured you, you should not have any grounds to be part of a lawsuit against them. Class-action suits start with a lead plaintiff—basically a representative of the group who stands in for hundreds or thousands of other individuals in a similar or theoretically similar, but not necessarily identical, situation. This is particularly key in cases relating to privacy and data, where a small handful of plaintiffs for whom something goes badly wrong may be the reason that hundreds, thousands, or even millions of users then discover that … [Read more...] about Google, Facebook tell SCOTUS it should be harder for you to sue them
Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon now plan to support Apple in court in its fight with FBI
After some initial delay , several of the biggest names and competitors in the technology industry are now gearing up to stand firmly behind Apple in its fight with the FBI. Google, Facebook and Twitter are planning to file legal briefs in court to support Apple in the coming days, individuals close to each company confirmed to Mashable on Thursday. Sources close to the company suggested the legal filings are still in the works. One industry rep characterized it to Mashable as a "joint submission" on behalf of the companies. Microsoft's chief legal counsel informed Congress earlier in the day that his company will file an amicus brief to support Apple "next week." Facebook CEO’s message to critics: I am not going anywhere
The modus operandi might have changed but the message remains clear from the hallowed halls of Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park: Mark Zuckerberg isn’t going anywhere. This time Zuckerberg didn’t opt for a post on his own social network but communicated in a short but insightful interview to CNN. He was asked whether he is stepping down as chairman of Facebook . “That’s not the plan. I am not currently thinking that makes sense,” said the billionaire founder of Facebook. For any other company which has been in the eye of the storm for the best part of 2018, there would perhaps have been more pressure on its CEO and chairman. But Zuckerberg holds 60 per cent of ownership in Facebook and is no mood to leave anytime soon. But what about the other bigwigs at Facebook? Like its COO Sheryl Sandberg . Zuckerberg had an answer for that as well. He told CNN, “Sheryl is a really important part of this company. She’s been an important partner with me for 10 years. “I’m really proud … [Read more...] about Facebook CEO’s message to critics: I am not going anywhere
Facebook still nowhere close to YouTube in video war
Over the past year or so, Facebook has made increasingly aggressive attempts to chip away at YouTube 's dominance in the world of short internet videos. It hasn't made a dent yet, according to one key measure. Sandvine, a networking company that reports on which services use the most bandwidth, just published its most recent numbers. YouTube's share of US internet activity grew to 17.9%, up from 14% a year ago. Facebook's share is only 2.5%, down from the 3% it claimed a year ago. Below is a chart showing the share of each major video service in the US over the last two years. Netflix is far and away the biggest, and while Amazon and Hulu are tiny by comparison, both expanded during the year, surpassing Facebook. The growth of those services comes in part from the type of videos they stream: Longer, high-quality files that eat up lots of bandwidth. But since Sandvine measures data in the evenings, Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu may also look deceptively popular compared with … [Read more...] about Facebook still nowhere close to YouTube in video war
