The Internet of Secure Things Alliance, an IoT security certification body (a.k.a. ioXt ), has launched a new security certification for mobile apps and VPNs. The new ioXt compliance program includes a 'mobile application profile' – a set of security-related criteria against which apps can be certified. The profile or mobile app assessment includes additional requirements for virtual private network (VPN) applications. ZDNet Recommends Best VPN services for 2021: Safe and fast don't come for free Virtual private networks aren't essential only for securing your unencrypted Wi-Fi connections in coffee shops and airports. Every remote worker should consider a VPN to stay safe online. Read More Google and Amazon had a hand in shaping the criteria, along with number of certified labs such as NCC Group and Dekra, and mobile app security testing vendors such as NowSecure. Google Maps: 15 most interesting places to explore from home
The coronavirus essentially shut down travel -- local and internationally -- for the past year. With more people getting vaccinated, we're starting to see some hope that we can go on adventures again in the near-ish future . In the meantime, we've got Google Maps. Whether you're still anxious about the world opening back up, wanting to get a look at some locations before booking a trip, or your lust for travel exceeds your budget, you can take a mini-trip from home quite easily. Just pull up Google Maps on your PC or phone and start your search. While you can check out maps from everywhere on Earth, the Street View and Photo Sphere tools let you digitally roam virtually anywhere. To explore on your PC, first make sure you're in satellite mode. Click and drag the little yellow person in the bottom right of the screen to any blue highlighted spot on the map. On your phone, just tap the photo in the bottom left and Maps will "drop" you into your chosen location. … [Read more...] about Google Maps: 15 most interesting places to explore from home
Now You Can Color the Jawbone Jambox as Loud as It Plays
Jawbone made a name for itself selling Bluetooth earpieces that looked cool and actually worked, then took that knowledge to wireless speakers in the form of the Jambox. That could be why the Jambox is selling well, and is now the best-selling wireless speaker in the U.S., according to the company. It could also be clever marketing, like the just-launched Jambox remix site . Up till now the speaker was available in four different colors, each with slightly different styling. The new site lets customers mix and match different colors of the speaker grille with the plastic end caps. While many products offer custom colors, not many match the sheer variety the Jambox now offers. With 13 different grill colors and 9 flavors of end caps, buyers can choose among 117 potential combinations. 4 sweet Saturday deals: $7 PopSockets, $18 wireless LED speaker, $5 movies and more
With vaccines and whatnot, the world is starting to open back up again, and I'm actually traveling this weekend. Like, an actual trip on an airplane to a different place. It's been well over a year, and honestly I can't wait. I mention the trip because today's first item is sort of travel-related. See, I'm only flying one way; for the return I'm renting a truck, one that's very unlikely to support Bluetooth or have a line-in jack. And I must have my podcasts. So I need a speaker, ideally one that can play for 10 hours. Take a look -- and remember, please, that all deals here are available for a limited time and while supplies last. Codes and coupons are active at the time of this writing and may disappear or expire without warning. Elehot Portable Bluetooth Speaker $18 with promo code Elehot Amazon seller: Elehot Direct Price: $18 with promo code 32CH7G2O To my eye, this resembles an elongated pop can -- or maybe a shrunken pneumatic tube -- but … [Read more...] about 4 sweet Saturday deals: $7 PopSockets, $18 wireless LED speaker, $5 movies and more
Feels is a new dating app trying to ditch swiping for Stories
There’s a new dating app on the scene called Feels . Its unique selling point is an interface that feels closer to a Snapchat-style story or a TikTok feed rather than the swipeable cards found in other dating apps. TechCrunch reports Feels currently has around 100,000 users. Although the app is available globally, the company says its focus is primarily on the French market as it launches more widely. Feels is styling itself as an “anti-dating app,” but to be clear, this is very much still a dating app . You’re still reacting to profiles and having conversations, which, I’m sure, for a lot of people, will end up with them going on dates. At the same time, though, Feels’ interface, ahem, feels different enough from the competition to make it interesting. Profiles are made up of a combination of pictures, videos, and answers to prewritten questions (similar to Hinge), but each element fills up your whole screen, and you browse through a profile by tapping on the left or … [Read more...] about Feels is a new dating app trying to ditch swiping for Stories
