Galaxy s8 review
There comes a point in most successful products’ existences where they become predictable. The new model, building off of the triumphs of its prior version, maintains the same look and feel while introducing more subtle enhancements. Apple’s used this tack with the iPhone and iPad for multiple generations, and Microsoft has done the same with the Surface Pro in recent years. Don’t rock the boat; don’t fix what isn’t broken. And so, if you’ve seen last year’s Galaxy S8 from Samsung, you’ve seen this year’s Galaxy S9. Content with the design and appearance of the S8, Samsung focused its efforts on small, mostly unseen changes that result in a better overall experience, but not a dramatically different one. Of course, Samsung being Samsung, there are a bunch of new gimmicky features crammed into it so there’s something to show on commercials. That isn’t to say the Galaxy S9 and the larger S9 Plus are bad phones; the S8 was … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy S9 review: predictably great, predictably flawed
With its variable aperture camera, slim smaller bezels, and Snapdragon 845 processor, the Samsung Galaxy S9 will likely be one of the best smartphones of 2018, but don’t count out the Galaxy S8 Plus just yet. It still packs a punch and is on sale for $490 on eBay. eBay seller BuySPRY is selling the Galaxy S8 Plus in Orchid Gray and Midnight Black. Regardless of the color, the Galaxy S8 Plus on sale is the unlocked Verizon model, which means it works on AT&T and T-Mobile, though not Sprint. The Galaxy S8 Plus will not be in its retail box and won’t include Samsung-branded accessories, but the eBay seller said the phone is brand new. It comes with a 60-day seller warranty, for whatever that’s worth. Even without the retail box, original accessories, or device warranty, $490 is the lowest price we have seen on a supposedly new Galaxy S8 Plus. It definitely raises some eyebrows, but the seller’s 98.3 percent positive feedback and over 150,000 reviews … [Read more...] about Deal: Passing on the Galaxy S9? Grab a Galaxy S8 Plus for just $490
AT&T and Android Police have partnered up to give three of our readers a brand new Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, which is a $849 value. The Active series has been a fixture for some time now for Samsung. For the uninitiated, the basic concept with the Galaxy S8 Active is that you're getting the flagship S8 inside of a durable, rugged package. The S8 Active features a shatterproof screen (for drops of 5 feet or less onto flat surfaces), IP68-rated water and dust resistance, and what Samsung calls a "military grade" metal frame for everything else you throw at it. If that isn't enough for you, it packs a mammoth 4000mAh battery. You can read our review as well to get the full picture. You should also check out AT&T's current deals, which include several buy one get one deals on flagships. Right now if you buy a Galaxy S8 Active (or S8, S8+, Note8), you can get a Galaxy S8 thrown in for free on a second line. Not a bad consolation prize if you don't win this giveaway if you ask … [Read more...] about [Last day to enter] Giveaway: Win one of 3 brand new AT&T Samsung Galaxy S8 Actives [US]
As you may already know, we, as reviewers, tend to get our hands on numerous smartphones throughout the year simply due to the nature of our job. So while we technically don’t have daily drivers in the traditional sense, my definition of a daily driver is the phone that I always return to once I’m done with a review of another device. In that sense, my daily driver for the foreseeable future is the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, and here are five reasons why. Reason #1 – Display Samsung's prowess in this department continues to shine through with what is easily the best display on a smartphone right now It certainly wouldn’t be a post about the latest Samsung flagships without a mention of that gorgeous display, and it is one of the reasons why the Galaxy S8 Plus is my daily driver. Everyone has raved about this display, and Samsung’s prowess in this department continues to shine through with what is easily the best display on a smartphone right now. The … [Read more...] about 5 reasons why the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is my daily driver

Why does the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active exist? Don’t get me wrong, there is always something good about having choice in the Android space, but more so than any other year before it, this Active version of the original Galaxy S smartphone seems redundant. The Active line used to bring some different features underneath a dramatically different design which set it apart, but now it feels outdated. In this piece, we’re going to look at a few of the reasons why I personally think the Active line has lost its way. I used to be a huge proponent of this version of Samsung’s flagship lineup. Back at E3 2015, the Galaxy S6 Active was what was on my mind. It had just been announced a couple of months earlier and it seemed to look much better than the Galaxy S5 Active from the year prior. Once I got my hands on it, I understood another reason why I wanted the Active – the Galaxy S6 that year was a stark change from the plastic designs of Samsung’s recent past, as … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy S8 Active: Why?
NEW YORK—Samsung announced the Galaxy S9 to the world this week, and recently we were able to get our hot little hands on Samsung's latest. The phone is very much a Galaxy S8 with some upgrades; you can get the basic info here. On the S9, the fingerprint reader now sits below the camera and is a lot closer to where your finger would normally rest. After trying it in person, I'm happy to report that the fingerprint location is totally fixed. The Galaxy S9+ reader isn't just lower than it was on the S8; it's lower down on the back of the phone than the Pixel 2 XL that I brought for comparison. The S9 fingerprint reader should be easily reached by everyone, no matter your hand size. I didn't get to try the accuracy of the fingerprint reader, though, which I'm still apprehensive about. It's still one of the smallest fingerprint readers on the market, which could make it harder to use. The Galaxy S9 is not using exactly the same body as the Galaxy S8. The S9 is 1.2mm shorter than … [Read more...] about Galaxy S9 hands-on—Samsung fixes the biggest flaw of the Galaxy S8
It would appear that Samsung has yet again made a couple of great phones with the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, which isn’t too surprising considering their recent phones. You know, besides that one. Aside from that setback, Samsung has continued to innovate, pushing the limits of hardware design. And they did so without removing the headphone jack. In fact, the company appears to be doubling down on the standard by including a pair of earbuds in the box. And not just any ol’ pair of ‘buds, either. Bundled with your Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus, you’ll also get a $99 pair of earbuds from AKG, a well-known and trusted audio manufacturer whose parent company Harman was bought by Samsung just last year. With a build that’s half-plastic and half-braided fabric, they’re a mix between the plastic cables you’re used to getting with smartphones and a more premium feeling pair. That is, assuming your smartphone even came with headphones (I’m … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy S8 AKG earbuds: how good are they?
