Echo plus 2
Hardware You won't find any surprises with the Echo Plus's design. It features the same tall, cylindrical shape as the first model, except it has a metallic gray finish instead of matte black. The volume control dial makes a return, and it has buttons for muting the microphone and issuing voice commands (or "actions") on top. There is one useful addition, though: It has a line-out auxiliary port, which lets you hook it up to a larger speaker or an audio receiver. Amazon's big pitch with both of its new Echo models was better sound, thanks to a new speaker design. The cheaper model didn't live up to those claims, unfortunately. With the Echo Plus, though, you definitely get a slight bump in audio quality. It features a 2.5-inch woofer and a 0.8-inch tweeter -- a surprising configuration, since the original had a 2-inch tweeter, and normally I expect bigger speakers to deliver better sound. In use Configuring the Echo Plus takes a few minutes with the Alexa app. After joining the … [Read more...] about Amazon Echo Plus review: Alexa, is this all you’ve got?
The “plus” in the Amazon Echo Plus is an integrated ZigBee smart-home hub. It’s a feature that boosts this smart speaker’s price tag by a third compared to the $100 second-generation Echo, and by a factor of three compared to the $50 second-generation Echo Dot. Having one smart appliance do the job of two sounds like a good idea, but most people will be happier with a more powerful smart-home hub that works in conjunction with Alexa, even if the combination costs more.Don’t get me wrong. Amazon is way out in front when it comes to enabling voice control of the smart home, thanks to partnerships with all the major players—DIY platforms like Samsung SmartThings and the Wink Hub 2 as well as big installers such as Vivint Smart Home and ADT Pulse—and a deep commitment to helping any and every interested third-party manufacturer tap into its Amazon Voice Service (i.e., its Alexa digital assistant). I can recommend any Echo model—except … [Read more...] about Amazon Echo Plus review: Not plus enough

The Amazon Echo is one of the most popular smart speakers on the market today, giving users the ability to command Alexa to browse the internet or order items from Amazon. Here’s how the new models compare to the first generation in design, sound, connectivity, calling, and pricing.DesignEncased in a tall, black (or white) cylinder, the first-generation Echo is an imposing monolith. The original Echo emphasized simplicity with two buttons on top and a pinhole microphone and a ring around the edge to control the volume. The new Echo comes in a much smaller package (just 5.9 inches tall), and comes in different body designs. Although it may look like the original Echo, the inclusion of a Zigbee smart-home hub inside the Amazon Echo Plus means that it just got a lot easier for consumers to build out their own smart homes. It also means the Echo Plus will make it a lot harder for other smart-home-hub makers, too. Credit: Amazon Zigbee is an open-communications protocol built into a ton of smart-home devices, such as Philips Hue lights and smart locks . Because of its low-power requirements, it’s ideal for small devices, or those whose design would make it inconvenient for a large battery, or to be plugged in. A great example of this are door and window sensors. However, Zigbee devices can’t connect directly to the Internet, which is what enables you to control them remotely. They first must link to a bridge or hub (such as the Samsung SmartThings or Wink Hub 2 … [Read more...] about Why Amazon Echo Plus Is a ‘Game-Changer’ for Smart Homes
