Uncharted 4 is the best (and possibly last) game of its kind
In Rise of the Tomb Raider, the player handpicks the abilities of Lara Croft, along with her weapons, ammunition, supplies, and outfits. While missions follow relatively straight lines, the adventure at large is set in an open world pocketed with a bounty of distractions. And each encounter feels like an opportunity for the player to be expressive, albeit through the medium of violence. Rise of the Tomb Raider doesn’t match Uncharted in terms of memorability. The story is smart B-movie fare, but plot exists in the periphery, like a doting parent that’s watching her children figure out what they want to do on their own. Because the game’s world is larger, and the player’s path is uncertain, Rise of the Tomb Raider lacks the detailing of Uncharted 4, where one walk across a rope bridge feels as if dozens of artists sunk weeks into its each splintering plank of wood — because they almost certainly did. … [Read more...] about Uncharted 4 is the best (and possibly last) game of its kind
DDoSers are abusing Microsoft RDP to make attacks more powerful
“The collateral impact of RDP reflection/amplification attacks is potentially quite high for organizations whose Windows RDP servers are abused as reflectors/amplifiers,” Netscout explained. “This may include partial or full interruption of mission-critical remote-access services, as well as additional service disruption due to transit capacity consumption, state-table exhaustion of stateful firewalls, load balancers, etc.” … [Read more...] about DDoSers are abusing Microsoft RDP to make attacks more powerful
Memristor that forgets makes a good model neuron
This has a very specific effect on the device. If signals in the form of current have transited it within the last few seconds, it'll still be in the "on" state, and the current will travel with low resistance. Longer than that, however, and Ostwald ripening ensures that it goes back to the off state, meaning that any additional signals face high resistance. This also sets an activity threshold for the memristor, as it has to receive more than one signal in quick succession before it will become active—again, a bit like a neuron. … [Read more...] about Memristor that forgets makes a good model neuron
Cable lobby says Google Fiber doesn’t need Title II to get pole access
If cable providers were classed as telecommunications carriers, “there’d be the possibility of significant increases in the fees we’d have to pay the utilities for the exact same attachments that we have,” NCTA’s associate general counsel Steve Morris told Ars recently. “How you’re classified affects what you have to pay. It’s not a logical regime but that’s how it works.” … [Read more...] about Cable lobby says Google Fiber doesn’t need Title II to get pole access
