Fetching AI Data: Researchers Get Leg Up on Teaching Dogs New Tricks with NVIDIA Jetson
AI is going to the dogs. Literally. Colorado State University researchers Jason Stock and Tom Cavey have published a paper on an AI system to recognize and reward dogs for responding to commands. The graduate students in computer science trained image classification networks to determine whether a dog is sitting, standing or lying. If a dog responds to a command by adopting the correct posture, the machine dispenses it a treat. The duo relied on the NVIDIA Jetson edge AI platform for real-time trick recognition and treats. Stock and Cavey see their prototype system as a dog trainer’s aid — it handles the treats — or a way to school dogs on better behavior at home. “We’ve demonstrated the potential for a future product to come out of this,” Stock said Fetching Dog Training Data The researchers needed to fetch dog images that exhibited the three postures. They found the Stanford Dogs datasets had more than 20,000 at many positions and image sizes, requiring … [Read more...] about Fetching AI Data: Researchers Get Leg Up on Teaching Dogs New Tricks with NVIDIA Jetson
Kids Who Own Dogs Are More Active
When little Johnny or Molly asks for a puppy for their birthday, parents may want to give in. New research in England suggests children whose families own dogs are more active than those without a furry friend running around. The research could have implications for childhood obesity in the United States, where 17 percent of 2- to 19-year-olds are obese, according to a 2007-2008 survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among 6- to 19-year-olds, obesity has tripled over the past two decades, according to the CDC. The researchers from St George's, University of London used activity monitors to record movement levels of 2,065 children ages 9 and 10 over the course of seven days. The kids came from 78 schools in London, Birmingham and Leicester, 202 of whom owned dogs. Results showed children with dogs spent an average of 325 minutes (more than five hours) doing physical activity per day, 11 more minutes than those without household dogs. This included time … [Read more...] about Kids Who Own Dogs Are More Active
A dog says ‘Coca-Cola’ like a human and it’s super impressive
In the latest episode of the neverending series about animals that try to act like humans, this cute little pup has a crack at speaking just like its owners. The dog, identified in the video as Phoebe, tries its best to utter the word "Coca-Cola," which ends up sounding something like "ruh-roh rohla." It somehow manages to nail the name "Laura" however, which is pretty damn impressive. The video was uploaded onto YouTube by user Matthew Hackling, and we're keen to see what Phoebe can say next... Dogs know where their paws end and the world begins
Dogs know where their paws end and the world begins, a new study shows, adding our furry companions to a group of animals that, like humans, recognize themselves as distinct entities from their environment. Called body awareness, this ability is one of the most basic manifestations of self-representation (also known as self-awareness). Humans develop body awareness very early in life: 5-month-old babies can distinguish their own moving legs from a video recording of the same action, for example. This ability then develops into more complex forms of distinguishing oneself from those around them. Previous research mainly tested species on more complex forms of the ability. For example, one of the most famous tests of self-representation is the "mirror-mark task," in which animals are thought to possess a more advanced form of self-representation, if they can recognize themselves in a mirror.
