TikTok owner ByteDance is working on a Clubhouse-like app for China, sources familiar with the matter said, as the global success of the U.S.-based audio chat service inspires a rush of copycats in the country. At least a dozen similar apps have been launched in the past month, with momentum picking up after Clubhouse was blocked in China in early February. Clubhouse had seen a surge in users who participated in discussions on sensitive topics such as Xinjiang detention camps and Hong Kong independence. New offerings include Xiaomi Corp's reworking of its Mi Talk app into an invitation-only audio service targeted at professionals last week. More are currently under development, industry executives say. ByteDance's plans are still in the early stages, said two sources who were not authorised to speak to media and declined to be identified. Orange looks for new investor in loss-making banking unit : Source
Orange, France's biggest telecoms firm, is looking for a new investor in its banking unit, a source close to the matter said, as it seeks to mitigate the heavy losses made by the four-year-old division. Chief Executive Officer Stephane Richard trumpeted the launch in 2017 of Orange Bank as key strategic step toward the diversification of revenues streams for the group, which faces tough competition from rivals in France and Spain, its two biggest markets. The online bank was developed thanks to the acquisition of a majority stake in lender Groupama Banque. Groupama, a French insurer, now owns 22% of the group. Orange controls the remaining 78%. "The question is to find a partner to accelerate and continue the development of Orange Bank," the source said. "It's up to Groupama to say if they're ready to exit or not," the source added. Spokesmen for Groupama and Orange declined to comment. French business daily Les Echos earlier reported that this search for a new … [Read more...] about Orange looks for new investor in loss-making banking unit : Source
Third time is a charm… until it isn’t: SpaceX Starship rocket nails landing, then blows up
The latest heavy-duty launch vehicle prototype from SpaceX soared flawlessly into the sky in a high-altitude test blast-off on Wednesday from Boca Chica , Texas , then flew itself back to Earth to achieve the first upright landing for a Starship model . It was the third such landing attempt to end in a fireball after an otherwise successful test flight for the Starship, being developed by SpaceX to carry humans and 100 tons of cargo on future missions to the moon and Mars . For Musk , the billionaire SpaceX founder who also heads the electric carmaker Tesla Inc , the outcome was mixed news. The Starship SN10 came far closer to achieving a safe, vertical touchdown than two previous models - SN8 in December … [Read more...] about Third time is a charm… until it isn’t: SpaceX Starship rocket nails landing, then blows up
Snap says revenue growth does not depend on more users, engagement
Snap Inc Chief Executive Evan Spiegel said Wednesday the tech company expects it can deliver 50% annual revenue growth over several years even without growing its user base or engagement . Spiegel clarified a previous estimate by saying 50% annual revenue growth does not depend on further user or engagement growth, and reflects the "steady state" of the current business. He spoke at the virtual Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference on Wednesday. Spiegel said Snap can grow its average revenue per user as it continues to develop augmented reality products like photo filters and add more media content, such as shows within its discover feature. The company, which owns popular photo-messaging app Snapchat, earns revenue by selling ads on the app and has focused heavily on developing better ad formats for brands, as well as helping advertisers sell products to young audiences throughout the pandemic. Snap had revenue of $911 million and … [Read more...] about Snap says revenue growth does not depend on more users, engagement
