This story is part of Generation China , CNET's series exploring the nation's technological ambition. China wants a shiny new internet -- and you may like what the country has in mind. Its plan promises a network fast enough to show you as a live hologram in a video chat, secure enough to block data deluge attacks that crush websites, flexible enough to easily accommodate Elon Musk's Starlink satellite-powered broadband and responsive enough to let you drive a car remotely. But there's a big problem with this proposal, called New IP, that Huawei and China's three powerful state-owned telecommunications companies are pushing. It's freighted with political and technological baggage that mean its chances for success are low. New IP would shift control of the internet, both its development and its operation, to countries and the centralized telecommunications powers that governments often run. It would make it easier to crack down on dissidents. Technology in New IP to … [Read more...] about China has big ideas for the internet. Too bad no one else likes them

Google appoints another Black executive to oversee responsible AI research after staff unrest
OAKLAND: Alphabet Inc's Google on Thursday named Marian Croak, one of its few Black executives, to oversee research on responsible artificial intelligence (AI) after weeks of internal anger over its firing of a prominent Black scientist. Google confirmed Croak will manage 10 teams, including a dozen scientists studying the ethical considerations of automated technologies known as AI. Ethical AI co-lead Timnit Gebru said in December that Google abruptly fired her for contesting company orders. Employees for weeks have expressed concern that Gebru's critiques of Google led to unfair punishment, and Croak has been among executives trying to broker a way forward between staff and management. Croak, a vice president of engineering who will report to Google AI chief Jeff Dean, told employees in a Thursday meeting that she respected Gebru and that what happened to her was unfortunate. In a video on Google's blog, she also acknowledged dissent in the research areas now in … [Read more...] about Google appoints another Black executive to oversee responsible AI research after staff unrest
Google not to build or use other web tracking tools after phasing out cookies
Alphabet Inc.'s Google will not build or use alternate tools for tracking web browsing traffic once it begins phasing out existing technology from its Chrome browser next year, the search engine said in a blog post Wednesday, in a move that will reshape how online advertising works. Google first announced it would get rid of third-party cookies , which for decades has enabled online ads, early last year to meet growing data privacy standards in Europe and the United States. Privacy activists for years have criticised tech companies, including Google, for using cookies to gather web browsing records across websites they don't own, enabling them to develop profiles on users' interests to serve personalised ads. Now, Google is pledging it will not use other technology to replace the cookie or build features inside Chrome to allow itself access to that data, though it continues to test ways for businesses to target ads to large groups of anonymous users with common … [Read more...] about Google not to build or use other web tracking tools after phasing out cookies
To insure its cloud users, Google partners with Allianz, Munich Re
Google is teaming up with two global insurers to cover cyber breaches and related risks for businesses that use its cloud services, the first time a major provider has opened up such insurance to its clients, the companies said on Tuesday. Major insurers have been treading carefully on cyber risks for years, but the tie-up between Google, Allianz and Munich Re gives the insurers special access to data to see what controls are in place at client firms to help them price the risk. "This is extremely key. This is data that we as insurance carriers traditionally have not had access to," said Thomas Kang, head of North American cyber, tech and media at Allianz's AGCS unit. The initial targeted customers are U.S.-based companies with annual revenue of between $500 million and $5 billion. "We didn't want to overreach coming out of the box. But the plan is obviously to expand this offering both up and down the revenue scale very shortly," said Bob Parisi, head of … [Read more...] about To insure its cloud users, Google partners with Allianz, Munich Re
