If you're a wildlife enthusiast, you're probably aware of the live video streams available on Africam , the ad-supported 'profit-for-purpose' website that's dedicated to showcasing African wildlife and increasing conservation awareness. Samsung Mobile has teamed up with Africam to launch Wildlife Watch , a two-month pilot project running until 2 May that gives anyone with an internet connection the chance to monitor live video from Balule Nature Reserve in South Africa, report any suspicious incidents, and donate to support the Black Mambas Anti-Poaching Unit . The latter is a pioneering all-female, unarmed, team of rangers who patrol the 500 square kilometres of the Balule reserve daily, checking for poachers and evidence of their activities such as wire snares and fence break-ins. Will Fortnite Return? Arizona bill could challenge Apple’s App Store payments monopoly
US legislators have passed a bill that could change how the Apple App Store and Google Play Store operate on smartphones. The bill could also have an impact on Epic Games’ ongoing legal battle with Apple, and could see Fortnite allowed back onto iPhones. The Arizona House of Representatives passed bill HB2005 , which would, among other things, prevent digital distribution platforms from requiring Arizona-based developers and consumers to use “a specific in-application payment system as the sole method of accepting payments”. If it’s passed into law the bill would mean Google and Apple can no longer force people to use their Play Store or App Store distribution platform for purchases, and would have to give developers and users the choice of other options. The existing lack of choice is what forced Epic Games to try and circumvent Apple’s policies, leading to Fortnite being booted from iOS devices. Making a Hollywood movie, from home: Using cloud computing to film a thriller in a pandemic
For most office workers, the "stay at home" orders delivered by governments at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic has meant lingering kitchen-chair backaches and awkward after-work Zoom drinks. For Max Votolato, the co-producer of Hollywood thriller Songbird , directed by Adam Mason, WFH has been an entirely different challenge: to manage the delivery of a full-length feature film from his own house, watching what was happening on set through the screen of an iPad Pro. When on March 19th, California's 40 million residents were asked to stay at home, no exceptions were made for Hollywood. Film productions only re-started at the beginning of June, with very restrictive health and safety protocols that required crews to be as small as possible when shooting on set. Oprah’s Meghan and Harry interview exemplifies Paramount Plus’ streaming challenges
Two of the biggest entertainment events of the weekend could have been Paramount Plus exclusives: Oprah’s highly anticipated interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, and Eddie Murphy’s eagerly awaited Coming 2 America . Instead, the former is now only available on CBS’s website (free) and the latter is streaming exclusively on Amazon. For a company whose executives just touted the vital importance of leaning into streaming, having launched Paramount Plus within days of the interview and film being released, not finding a way to have one or the other — or both, ideally — available on demand is head-scratch worthy. One absence is more understandable than the other. Harpo (Oprah’s production company) did not make the streaming video on-demand rights available to ViacomCBS, The Verge has learned. The interview was available on Paramount Plus as live programming, but there’s no replay available for subscribers. Their interview became the most streamed event outside … [Read more...] about Oprah’s Meghan and Harry interview exemplifies Paramount Plus’ streaming challenges
Demand for fee to use password app LastPass sparks backlash
A popular app that promised to eliminate the burden of remembering passwords has sparked a backlash by demanding, weeks after it was acquired by two private equity firms, that users pay up or face restrictions on access to their online accounts. LastPass has encouraged millions of people to replace weak passwords on retail websites, Internet banks and other online services. Instead, the software handles authentication automatically using long, complex passwords that are impossible to guess—or remember. Two investment firms, Elliott Management and Francisco Partners, acquired the service as part of their $4.3 billion buyout of Internet software group LogMeIn in September last year. Now, the app is warning users that they must pay as much as $36 a year if they want access to those cumbersome passwords on all their devices. Those who refuse to pay will have to choose between synching only to their desktop computers, or only to mobile devices such as phones. The change, which comes … [Read more...] about Demand for fee to use password app LastPass sparks backlash
