Our editor-in-chief obviously hates me. That's the only conclusion I could reach after he asked me to watch an abysmal attack video targeting renewable energy—a video produced by a notorious source of right-wing misinformation. But despite its bizarre mishmash of irrelevancies and misdirection, the video has been widely shared on social media. Perhaps you've seen it, or maybe you just to want to be ready when a family member brings it up in an argument. What, if anything, is true in this farrago of bad faith? Yes, it’s awful The video is hosted by "Prager University." My only previous exposure to the organization's videos had been this excellent one on the Confederacy by Colonel Ty Seidule, a professor of History at West Point who has since been placed on the Pentagon commission that will examine bases named after Confederate generals. Seemed legit! Now that I've had to look more closely, however, it turns out that Prager U is not a university—it's run by a talk radio … [Read more...] about Pure nonsense: Debunking the latest attack on renewable energy

Fry’s Electronics calls it quits after nearly 36 years in business
Recap: Fry’s first opened its doors in 1985 and most recently operated more than two dozen stores, many of which were located in California and Texas. Each location had a unique theme; for example, the store in Phoenix was modeled after an Aztec temple while the Austin store was built with live music in mind. Fry’s Electronics, once considered by many to be the holy grail of electronics stores, is calling it quits. A message posted on the company’s website notes that after nearly 36 years in business, they’ve made the difficult decision to shut down operations and close the business permanently due to changes in the retail industry and challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic. Fry’s said it ceased regular operations and started an “orderly wind down process” on February 24, which it believes will be in the best interest of the company, creditors and other stakeholders. It’s been tough sledding for electronics retailers ever since the advent of online shopping. Chains … [Read more...] about Fry’s Electronics calls it quits after nearly 36 years in business
Members should be heard and not seen. The rise of Clubhouse and social audio?
I'm going to start this with a disclosure so I can get the fanboys and fangirls off my case from the beginning. I have turned down somewhere between 15-20 invites to Clubhouse. But about two weeks ago, I joined. Why? I want to see what the platform provides realistically and wanted to dispel the hype. I've spent a fair number of hours in it but not enough to be calling my wife a Clubhouse widow, so I am starting to get a good feel for what the potential value of Clubhouse and other social audio apps are. And what is so unutterably (though I am uttering it) ridiculous about the hype around it. To be clear, I don't care whether or not you are in love with Clubhouse. I'm not looking for you to defend it or denigrate it. The same way I don't care what Apple fan children love about Macs. They can't see the forest for the trees. I use Apple devices like the iPad Pro and the iPhone and will buy a 14" MacBook Pro with the M1x chip when it comes out. You know why I will? Because they are … [Read more...] about Members should be heard and not seen. The rise of Clubhouse and social audio?
