SpaceX Starship prototype SN10 flies high, nails landing, then explodes

· March 3, 2021 ·

A month after SpaceX's SN9 flew more than 6 miles (10 kilometers) high, its successor, SN10, duplicated the feat, flying high above Texas before nailing the landing -- a first for the prototype. SN10 is the third such developmental prototype of Starship, Elon Musk's next-generation rocket destined for the moon and Mars, to make a high-altitude flight since the mesmerizing flight and explosive ending of SN8 in December 2020 . SN9 flew high and then crash-landed and exploded on Feb. 2. The third try was the charm for SN10. SN10 reached its targeted altitude of 6 miles, cutting off each engine in series on the way up to throttle down and hit the desired apogee. The rocket then began an extended picturesque period of free fall -- a "belly flop" as it has come to be known -- before firing the engines back up to perform its trademark flip maneuver to make a vertical landing. After a six-minute journey, SN10 came to rest on the pad at SpaceX's facility in Boca Chica. … [Read more...] about SpaceX Starship prototype SN10 flies high, nails landing, then explodes

How to Make It in America (in a Sport That Gets No Love)

· March 11, 2014 ·

AUSTIN, Texas — If you want to make it in America as a pro athlete, the playbook's pretty simple: Get to the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL or (lately) MLS. But lacrosse players, women's softball players, curlers and others in less-celebrated team sports ? They all need day jobs to support their athletic habits. That thinking is almost always correct — but not quite always. A select few American athletes do make a living off the sports that never hit talk radio. But it's not just because they're extra talented; it's because they're extra strategic. See also: A YouTube Legend Battles for His Basketball Future Paul Rabil is one of those athletes. America's average self-proclaimed sports nut probably doesn't know the man's name, but Rabil plays for the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL). After he first turned pro — even though he was drafted first overall by the Cannons following a stellar career at Johns Hopkins University — Rabil moonlighted for a real estate company. … [Read more...] about How to Make It in America (in a Sport That Gets No Love)

Netflix isn’t making The Queen’s Gambit season 2 right now – here’s why

· March 2, 2021 ·

Anya Taylor-Joy has revealed that there have been no talks over a second season of The Queen's Gambit. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight after her Golden Globes win for best actress in a limited series, Taylor-Joy was asked if she would be open to reprising her role as competitive chess player Beth Harmon. "Maybe," Taylor-Joy said when asked about the prospect. "Not to disappoint anybody, but we just never thought about it. It was always a sapling to tree transition. You see her grow, you leave her in a good place. So we were genuinely surprised when people were like, 'Where's season 2?'" Despite confirming that a follow-up to the award-winning Netflix series wasn't on the table, Taylor-Joy admitted that she would consider a return if showrunners Scott Frank and Allan Scott asked her to. "That being said," Taylor-Joy added, "I adore the entire team that made it, and I would jump at the chance to work with them again." Netflix's The Queen's Gambit is quietly one of … [Read more...] about Netflix isn’t making The Queen’s Gambit season 2 right now – here’s why
