This long-lost Linux distro is making a big comeback

· April 19, 2021 ·

Slackware , one of the oldest Linux distros , has put out the beta of its upcoming 15.0 release, nearly a decade after version 14.0. Slackware was created by Patrick Volkerding and had its first release almost three decades back, in 1993. This makes the distro one of the two oldest Linux distros that are still actively maintained (the other being Debian ). While Slackware is still actively developed behind the scenes, the distro doesn’t put out releases as often as some of the current crop. Check our collection of the best Linux distros for business Here’s our list of the best Linux distros for developers And, these are the best laptops for developers Most modern distros, such as Ubuntu and Fedora, release every six months, but Slackware follows the “release when it’s ready” philosophy. No surprise, then, that the distro’s downloadable images last hit the mirrors sometime in 2016 with Slackware 14.2. Upcoming release Designed firmly for experienced … [Read more...] about This long-lost Linux distro is making a big comeback

Teradata soars after pre-announcing Q1 revenue, EPS above expectations, higher-than-expected cloud revenue

· April 21, 2021 ·

Venerable Big Data company Teradata this afternoon pre-announced for its Q1 results, raising its outlook for profit above its prior outlook, and above what analysts have been modeling, and indicating its revenue will be higher than expected as well. The company also forecast higher annualized recurring revenue from its public cloud operations. The report sent Teradata shares soaring by almost 30% in late trading . The company said in prepared remarks, "During the first quarter of fiscal 2021, the Company performed strongly across all its revenue categories, resulting in total revenues being comparable to the fourth quarter of fiscal 2020, rather than lower on a sequential basis but higher than the prior year period per the previous guidance." Revenue in Q4 had been $491 million. Ergo, if this quarter's revenue is comparable, it is higher than the $449 million the Street has been modeling. Teradata added, "In addition, the Company experienced strong gross margin … [Read more...] about Teradata soars after pre-announcing Q1 revenue, EPS above expectations, higher-than-expected cloud revenue

Hanging in the Balance: More Research Coordination, Collaboration Needed for AI to Reach Its Potential, Experts Say

· April 21, 2021 ·

As AI is increasingly established as a world-changing field, the U.S. has an opportunity not only to demonstrate global leadership, but to establish a solid economic foundation for the future of the technology. A panel of experts convened last week at GTC to shed light on this topic, with the co-chairs of the Congressional AI Caucus, U.S. Reps. Jerry McNerney (D-CA) and Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH), leading a discussion that reflects Washington’s growing interest in the topic. The panel also included Hodan Omaar, AI policy lead at the Center for Data Innovation; Russell Wald, director of policy at Stanford University’s Institute for Human-Centered AI and Damon Woodard, director of AI partnerships at University of Florida’s AI Initiative. “AI is getting increased interest among my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and this is going to continue for some time,” McNerney said. Given that momentum, Gonzalez said the U.S. should be on the bleeding edge of AI development “for both … [Read more...] about Hanging in the Balance: More Research Coordination, Collaboration Needed for AI to Reach Its Potential, Experts Say

NVIDIA Partners with Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania on AI Pathways Program

· April 20, 2021 ·

Meet Paige Frank: Avid hoopster, Python coder and robotics enthusiast. Still in high school, the Pittsburgh sophomore is so hooked on AI and robotics, she’s already a mentor to other curious teens. “Honestly, I never was that interested in STEM. I wanted to be a hair stylist as a kid, which is also cool, but AI is clearly important for our future!” said Paige. “Everything changed in my freshman year, when I heard about the AI Pathways Institute.” The initiative, known as AIPI for short, began in 2019 as a three-week pilot program offered by Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania (BGCWPA). Paige was in the first cohort of 40 youth to attend AIPI, which also included Tomi Oalore (left) and Makiyah Carrington (right), shown above. Building on the success of that program, NVIDIA and BGCWPA this week have entered into a three-year partnership with the goal of expanding access to AI education to more students, particularly those from underserved and underrepresented … [Read more...] about NVIDIA Partners with Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania on AI Pathways Program

M1 Everywhere: Apple accelerates custom chip transition

· April 21, 2021 ·

Highly anticipated: It’s tough to keep a secret in the tech industry these days. Just ask Apple. After years of “didn’t see that coming” (or, at least, the hope of “One More Thing…”), it’s becoming increasingly rare for Apple to be able to pull off a genuine surprise at their big launch events, especially on the product side. Yesterday’s Spring Loaded event was no exception, with the debut of a widely anticipated new iPad Pro , AirTags location finders, Podcast service, and the svelte new iMacs . But while there may not have been any serious product surprises, there was a little bit of uncertainty about the direction and speed of its technical transition to Arm-powered devices. Those questions were completely put to rest, however, with the new iMac and iPad Pro announcements and the inclusion of the company’s self-designed M1 chip into both products. It’s now clear that Apple is not only committed to making the M1, and its subsequent Arm-powered processors, the core of all … [Read more...] about M1 Everywhere: Apple accelerates custom chip transition
