Getaround wants to help you start your own car-sharing business

· March 5, 2021 ·

Getaround, the peer-to-peer car-sharing service, is launching a new program to help support people who want to rent out more than just a couple of cars. The program is called Power Host, and it’s designed to help customers manage small fleets of shared vehicles. Getaround, which operates in 800 cities globally and has over 6 million users, created the program in response to a growing number of its customers seeking to start a small car-sharing business for themselves. After an initial steep drop in bookings after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Getaround has since seen its demand bounce back. And now people are looking for ways to use the platform in a more professional capacity. “We just started seeing a significant increase in owners who had a few cars [and] who wanted to buy more,” Dan Kim, chief operating officer at Getaround, told The Verge . “They were seeing a lot more demand and they wanted to just have more vehicles and more service.” He added, “Our hosts were … [Read more...] about Getaround wants to help you start your own car-sharing business

Microsoft: We’re cracking down on Excel macro malware

· March 4, 2021 ·

Macro malware has been a popular choice for hackers since the 1990s and even in recent years the technique has continued to be a simple way of delivering malware to the unwary. Just last month, Ukraine accused Russian government spies of uploading documents with malicious macros to a Ukrainian government document-sharing site. And amid the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Microsoft warned of emails containing Excel files with malicious macros . Apps, drone deliveries and AI: How technology stepped up its game to fight COVID-19

· March 5, 2021 ·

For the past few months, an independent board of technology experts has been closely tracking the new ways that AI and data have been used to counter and mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK; and now, they are lifting the veil on the good, the bad and the ugly of the past year in digital tech. The Center for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) has released a new report diving deep into the 118 individual use-cases for AI and data-driven technologies that have been added to the organization's COVID-19 repository since last November. Spanning vastly different sectors and locations, the examples collated in the document provide a unique vision of the ways that technology can help in a time of crisis. From piloting drones to delivering medical supplies, to monitoring the behavior of residents in public transport during the easing of lockdown restrictions: if there is one observation that all experts will agree on, it is certainly that technology has been a central … [Read more...] about Apps, drone deliveries and AI: How technology stepped up its game to fight COVID-19

Vertu’s Ayxta Fold 5G is the first “luxury” foldable phone

· March 4, 2021 ·

TL;DR: Vertu's target audience has never been the average user, and this time is no different. The company's Ayxta Fold 5G is a poorly disguised Royole FlexPai 2 with a leather back, and the privilege to own it costs no less than $7,100. Every time you think Vertu has finally thrown in the towel , the company manages to come up with yet another superlative announcement. This time, however, it does so when the slow economic recovery and a global shortage of semiconductors are reshaping consumer behavior. Vertu's new luxury phone is of the foldable variety, with the company's typical design modifications and OS alterations, all at a price that will make most consumers run away. Essentially, it's a Royole FlexPai 2 , the successor to the first foldable phone to have entered the market and also an improvement over the original in terms of how the software integrates with the hardware. But in Vertu's world, it's the Ayxta Fold 5G, a luxury phone with surprisingly little in the … [Read more...] about Vertu’s Ayxta Fold 5G is the first “luxury” foldable phone

From PS5 to Ford F-150: How a global chip shortage is ‘impacting everything’

· March 5, 2021 ·

The biggest news in the automotive industry right now isn't new electric vehicles or Tesla CEO Elon Musk's latest comments. It's a major semiconductor shortage that's hurting automakers across the globe. Because Ford , General Motors , Toyota and others can't get certain electronic components they need, they're cutting production on vehicles like the Ford F-150 . And it's not just cars. There also are shortages in chips for Sony Playstation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X consoles , and people have been camping out -- during a pandemic -- to buy Nvidia's graphics processors . Even Qualcomm , the world's biggest mobile chipmaker, can't get enough processors to meet the demands of its handset customers. It's this situation -- more than competition or a lukewarm consumer reception to 5G -- that worries Qualcomm's incoming CEO, Cristiano Amon. The 50-year-old Brazilian has been at Qualcomm since 1995 and became president in 2018. He'll become only the fourth CEO in the … [Read more...] about From PS5 to Ford F-150: How a global chip shortage is ‘impacting everything’
