Clad in midnight blue and chased in gold, the original Asus ZenBook 3 was lauded for its bold, unconventional style. It was a gorgeous laptop, but it had a few flaws. Its successor, the Asus ZenBook 3 Deluxe, aims to set things right. During our Asus ZenBook 3 Deluxe review, we found that this little thing was just full of surprises, and the addition of new eighth-generation Intel Core processors accounts for only one of our revelations. Asus shipped us its newest machine equipped with an Intel Core i7-8550U processor, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB PCIe solid state drive, and a 14-inch 1080p display panel, all at a retail price of $1,700. The ZenBook 3 Deluxe is otherwise identical to the machine that we reviewed earlier this year, with internals that aren’t very different from the original ZenBook, and with an overall silhouette that is very similar — just stretched out to 14 inches. This laptop is full of pleasant surprises, so let’s dig into it. Gilded elegance Asus decided … [Read more...] about Now even faster, Asus’ Zenbook 3 still brings the bling
Asus zenbook 3 review
Apple’s MacBook is a decent notebook, but it has problems, particularly in performance. Its Core M processor just isn’t as quick as some users desire.Enter Asus, and the Zenbook 3, which asks a simple question. Why compromise? Core M is efficient, but is it really necessary to create a super-slim, portable system? Asus doesn’t think so. And hopes its latest notebook — which can be purchased with up to a Core i7 dual-core — will be the proof.A form of flatteryThe new Zenbook 3 looks very similar to Apple’s MacBook at first glance. And second. And third. The shared use of all metal-design with a broad, single display hinge and speakers above the keyboard makes the resemblance uncanny.Yet there are major differences. The Zenbook 3 has a smaller touchpad, and matches the color of the keys to the body, decisions that create some distance between the Apple and the Asus. More importantly, the Zenbook 3 boasts the shiniest version of the brand’s … [Read more...] about Hands on: Asus Zenbook 3
It’s been a great year for ultra-portable laptops. With the MacBook Air sliding into obscurity, falling further and further behind the curve, other manufacturers have stepped up to fill that void with their own high-powered, razor-thin, super-premium laptops. Two in particular have been vying for the coveted crown as the best ultra-portable notebook on the market, the Asus Zenbook 3 and the Acer Swift 7.Both are impressively built, both are fast and reliable. But which one will come out on top when we pit them against one another head-to-head, matching spec-for-spec?PerformanceLooking at the specs side-by-side, you can see some trends emerge. The Zenbook is a little more expensive, so it’s got a little more power under the hood, but other than that the Zenbook and Swift are evenly-matched. The Swift has a comparable graphics engine, similar battery life, and it has more ports. In an age when manufacturers are paring down the profiles of their flagship notebooks, those extra … [Read more...] about Asus Zenbook 3 vs. Acer Swift 7: Two of the thinnest Windows laptops duke it out
By the time Asus CEO Jonney Shih left the stage at Computex 2016, it was crystal clear that the new Zenbook 3 — slated for release in summer 2016 — was being touted as the nemesis of the new Macbook. Shih’s speech, supported by a series of sleek infographics, repeatedly compared the Zenbook to the Macbook, focusing on the smaller frame and increased processing power of the Zenbook 3. Asus, holding home-court advantage at Computex (held in Taipei), chose to take the fight to Apple by promoting the Zenbook as the Macbook’s counterpart.Apple, on the other hand, didn’t devote much press to the 2016 Macbook. After a celebrated 2015 release, the new iteration of the Macbook received a few key updates — notably, new processing chips. While they were busy promoting the new iPhone SE and a bevy of Apple Watch straps, the new Macbook slid silently onto shelves across the world. While it seems unlikely that Apple will recognize — let … [Read more...] about Apple Macbook (2016) vs. Asus Zenbook 3: Which book is more “ultra”?
On Monday during Computex 2016 in Taipei, Asus held a press conference revealing a number of new products, three of which were 2-in-1 hybrids that were revealed as soon as company chairman Jonney Shih hit the stage. These included the Asus Transformer 3, the Asus Transformer 3 Pro, and the ZenBook 3.ZenBook 3For starters, the new ZenBook 3 sports a metal unibody construction and an aerospace-grade aluminum alloy design, with the chassis ranging from 11.9mm to 3.5mm in thickness (or thinness). The display’s bezel is rather thin too, measuring 16mm thick on the bottom, 11.5mm on the top, and 7mm on the sides, resulting in an 82-percent screen to body ratio. Overall, the new laptop weighs only two pounds, making the ZenBook not only light, but extremely thin.According to Tsang, the specs include up to an Intel Core i7 processor, up to a 1TB SSD, and up to 16GB of memory clocked at 2,133MHz. There’s also support for USB Type-C ports, and a 40Wh battery promising … [Read more...] about Super-thin systems headline Asus’ Zenbook brand at Computex 2016
Last year we declared the Asus ZenBook UX305 the best budget ultrabook of 2015, for delivering performance and quality that belied its price. It's no surprise Asus has barely altered the blueprint for the 2016 model. The most notable difference is the CPU. The previous model's Broadwell-based Core M-5Y10 is now replaced by Intel's Skylake Core m3-6Y30 chip.Other than that, there's little detectable difference. That means while the previous model's strengths remain, so do its weaknesses. As before, the 13.3-inch, 1920-by-1080 IPS screen is merely average. There's still no keyboard backlighting, and the trackpad, while adequate, has an unusual bounce to it. Also, in the light of 2016, it would be nice to see USB-C on the UX305 for charging—and as a replacement for the funky micro-HDMI port. Fortunately, those annoyances are overshadowed by the UX305's assets. It's superthin at less than 13mm, as well as reasonably light at 2 pounds, 10.3 ounces. It continues to be fanless, … [Read more...] about Asus ZenBook UX305 review: Still the best budget ultrabook around
Buying a cheaper Windows tablet always means answering the same question: Can I do as much as I want while still paying less? In the case of the $399 Asus Transformer Mini (T102HA), the answer is yes, but just barely.Your first impression of the Mini will almost certainly be of an updated Microsoft Surface 3 (now discontinued), with a redesigned, sturdy keyboard and a stylus to boot. But that image is only skin-deep. Inside its thoughtfully designed exterior lies a number of mediocre components. It’s like buying a shiny Red Delicious apple at a supermarket. What’s inside isn’t usually the crisp, sweet crunch you'd hoped for. But let’s start with the positives. Asus clearly followed where Microsoft led: While the Mini adopts the same compact form factor of the Surface 3, the faux fabric backing the keyboard probably will remind you of the Surface Pro 4. The Mini measures 10.2 inches by 6.7 inches by 0.55 inches (13.9 mm) in laptop mode, and weighs a … [Read more...] about Asus Transformer Mini review: This 2-in-1 delivers good-enough computing on the cheap
With a stunning, lightweight design, quality keyboard and super-affordable price point, the Asus UX305 provides better bang for your buck than competing laptops. Sure, it's not as powerful as machines like the Dell XPS 13, but it's plenty fast for basic productivity. And the notebook also offers a super-slim profile, long battery life and more storage space that most competing notebooks, starting at just $700. That makes the 13.3-inch ZenBook UX305 one of the best bargains in mobile computing. Design The UX305 is sleek and simple, with gentle, rounded edges. There are a few design flourishes, including tapered edges and a laser-cut circle pattern on the lid that looks great when it catches the light. And since the UX305 doesn't have a cooling fan, there are no cooling vents to interrupt its smooth outer shell. The aluminum deck is equally attractive in its minimalist design, with a black chicklet keyboard complemented by a sizable touchpad with integrated buttons. Business users … [Read more...] about Asus ZenBook UX305 Review: Is It Good for Business?
