We're happiest when looking forward to vacations, though once back in the office that level of glee is comparable to our non-vacationing cubicle mates, a new study finds. Essentially, vacations may not be the restorative respites they are chocked up to be.The researchers surveyed 1,530 Dutch adults, 974 of whom took a vacation during the 40-plus week study period. At certain time points both before and after trips, participants answered questions related to their happiness levels. Those in the planning phase of a vacation had higher happiness scores than those not going away, which the researchers say, is likely due to holiday anticipation. Following the trip, vacationers and non-vacationers showed no difference in their happiness levels, that is unless the time off was considered very relaxing. In that case, there was a slight happiness boost for vacationers noticeable during the first two weeks back. After eight weeks, that slight increase had faded completely, the scientists … [Read more...] about Do Vacations Boost Happiness?
BENGALURU: Rushil Goel, Ola's payments business head has resigned from the company to start his own venture after a year-long stint at the taxi hailing app, sources told TOI. Goel, a former consultant at The Boston Consulting Group, was heading all the initiatives at Ola Money for the Bengaluru based company. When contacted, Goel confirmed the development saying, "This was a personal call that I took as I’ll be starting something of my own." Goel's exit comes at a time when the country's payments ecosystem is abuzz with leading e-commerce players planning their forays in this space. TOI reported on March 15 that Amazon India had applied for a semi-closed wallet license with RBI while Flipkart has already activated its wallet Flipkart Money. In November last year, taxi hailing service provider Ola had started its dedicated mobile payments app-Ola Money, with plans to take on the likes of Paytm, Freecharge among others. Ola also started to diversify into new businesses such as … [Read more...] about Ola’s payment business head Rushil Goel quits
Earlier today, the WSJ published a report on how Amazon is building a Kindle-based point-of-sale payments service for local merchants using technology it picked up via its Gopago acquisition –something we actually reported on back in December. In fact, this looks like just part of what Amazon has in mind. The e-commerce giant is also developing a solution for person-to-person payments — bypassing banks and other payment networks — putting it in even closer competition with P2P payment giant PayPal. The P2P payment system, as it’s being conceived, would have a mobile component to it, and it would be cloud-based, so presumably usable over desktop, too. Those Amazon phones we and others keep talking about could be coming soon — the latest that we’ve heard, by the way, is that they may get announced in the next 60 days and ship this summer. Building in a P2P service to sweeten the deal, and help differentiate the phones from the rest of … [Read more...] about Amazon Wants To Include Peer-to-Peer Payments In Its “Real World” PayPal Competitor
In the aftermath of the death of a 2-year-old boy who was drowned by an alligator at a Disney resort in Florida, much of the public response has been sympathetic. But not all of it: Sprinkled across social media, online comments and even whisperings you may hear at the water cooler, some individuals are instead pointing fingers, blaming the parents. Is this a sign of the times? Is parenting shame on the rise and empathy taking a dive?Research says maybe so. The brain is wired for empathy, but it's also wired for moral judgments. And some facets of modern American culture may push people away from the former and toward the latter. The blame gameBeneath any given online article about the alligator attack, there are at least a few comments questioning the child's parents. The theme persists on the Twitter hashtag #DisneyGatorAttack."People are blaming an alligator for being an alligator, when the real issue here is child negligence. Watch your child," Tweeted a user with the handle … [Read more...] about Blame the Parents? Child Tragedies Reveal Empathy Decline
