Overall, the probability of being hit by a medium asteroid is smaller than the probability of various natural disasters. However, the potential for loss of human lives and extent of the damage in the long term is much greater for a medium-size impact than for any natural hazard. This point has been expressed very well by David Morrison (from the NASA Ames Research Center): "The impact hazard represents the extreme case of a calamity of low probability but high consequences – consequences that include the possible end of civilization as we know it." I would say this is threatening enough that we should at least try to think about possible survival or recovery plans. … [Read more...] about Q&A: Planetary Scientist Simulates Asteroid Impacts

During the Victorian era, and throughout the 19th century, "Natural Science" became something of a mania. Thousands of new species were discovered and described by intrepid adventurers and by backyard botanists and entomologists alike. In 1812, Georges Cuvier described fossils and hypothesized that Earth had undergone "successive bouts of Creation and destruction" over long periods of time. On Nov. 24, 1859, Charles Darwin published "On the Origin of Species," the text that forever changed the world by showing that all living things are interrelated and that species were not separately created but arise from ancestral forms that are changed and shaped by adaptation to their environment. … [Read more...] about What Is Biology?

Countless studies have identified employee resistance to new technologies as a major barrier to success. Perhaps it’s because they’re afraid the tech will make them redundant or maybe they haven’t been properly trained to use the software. Whatever the reason, understanding the role employees play in digitising your operations is critical. … [Read more...] about How the pandemic is catapulting corporate digital transformation
Samsung's HW-J355 is one of the best-selling soundbars, and for good reason. Not only does it offer good sound quality from its four combined-120W tweeters, but also comes with a wired subwoofer to add some meat to the sound. It's a bit on the trim side at 37.13 x 2.28 x 2.56 inches, but it only weighs 3.5 lbs. The accompanying subwoofer is wired, so that might be one hang-up, and you won't find a ton of ports here. On the plus side, though, it comes with 3D Sound Plus, which tries to simulate a surround sound effect using some clever sonic tricks. If you don't mind something basic, this is your guy. … [Read more...] about The best cheap soundbar deals and sales for April 2020
