In a statement Tuesday, Bash said he has named Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregg Sofer of Austin as the new chief of the Criminal Division for the Western District of Texas, which includes Austin, Waco, San Antonio, Del Rio, Alpine, Midland/Odessa and El Paso. He replaces Assistant U.S. Attorney Margaret Leachman of San Antonio, who is now a senior litigation counsel. In her new role, Leachman will focus on discovery and disclosure obligations, prosecutions and other matters of “particular significance.” “I have selected this team of supervisors from an outstanding pool of prosecutors and civil attorneys in the Western District of Texas,” said Bash, who was appointed late last year by President Trump. “I look forward to working with this team and our other supervisors to enhance the safety and security of the people of Central and West Texas.” Sofer has been with the Austin office since 2007, and has prosecuted a litany of crimes that include public corruption, terrorism and espionage. Before that, he worked for the Justice Department in a number of roles that included sections specifically targeting gangs and terrorism or counterintelligence.
