How much has college football changed in the playoff era? Well, two years ago this week, the national championship race was basically down to two scenarios — either undefeated Florida State would play undefeated Ohio State or the ’Noles would face the SEC champion. As you’ll recall, Auburn upset Alabama, Michigan State upset the Buckeyes and the ’Noles met the Tigers.Exciting, but concise.With just two weeks remaining in this regular season, no fewer than eight teams still hold realistic (by varying degrees) chances of making the College Football Playoff, with a few others still holding hopes alive of a nuclear scenario.Here, now, I handicap their chances from most to least likely, based both on the difficulty of their remaining games and their potential committee favorability. Please note, this is not a straight-up ranking of the teams.1. Alabama. The 10-1 Tide are safely swimming in the “win-and-they’re-in” pool, and I don’t see them losing to offensively inept Auburn (6-5) or Florida (10-1), the latter of whom may not score.
