What a pity. What a waste. Soccer legend Diego Maradona is slowly killing himself right before our eyes. The latest news that the one-time Argentine superstar is in a Buenos Aires hospital recovering from excessive smoking, drinking and eating is not surprising. It is just the latest in a long line of news bulletins detailing his demise. According to reports, he is being treated for alcohol abuse and “progressing well.” As great as he was, one has to wonder how much more magnificent Maradona could have been. Even while battling the demons of drug and alcohol addiction, Maradona was a marvelous talent – some claim he was better than Pele. I sat in Azteca Stadium in Mexico City and was mesmerized by Maradona’s stupendous 60-yard jaunt against England at the 1986 World Cup, arguably the greatest goal ever scored. That was after he demonstrated his cunning by batting the ball into the net – and getting away with it. No other player, including Pele, has dominated a World Cup like Maradona did as Argentina took the championship victory lap several weeks later in that same stadium.
